When people talk about stablecoins, they often focus on the token. But the real story is the infrastructure behind it. To issue, transfer, and hold a stablecoin means operating across an entire stack: - The underlying backing (fiat reserves, bank liabilities, or synthetic structures) - Minting and redemption flows tied to reserve management - The blockchain layer where settlement happens - Distribution channels like wallets, cards, and remittance apps - Treasury management and cross-border liquidity - FX bridges and on/off-ramps into the traditional system This isn’t a niche experiment anymore. Market cap has grown from roughly $5B in 2020 to nearly $300B today, a clear sign stablecoins have moved beyond crypto trading into broader financial use cases. Stablecoins aren’t just digital cash. They’re becoming a new coordination layer for global money movement.

Banks aren’t “doing tokenization.” They’re choosing between three very different money models Stablecoins | CBDCs | Tokenized deposits Over the past year, real-world deployments made the distinction clear: Stablecoins: – Bank or consortium issued – Sit outside deposit liabilities – Built for programmability + global rails SG-Forge (EUR/USD), Qivalis euro stablecoin, BNY custody for issuers CBDCs: – Sovereign money, two-tier distribution – Banks as intermediaries, not issuers China’s e-CNY is already live at scale Tokenized deposits: – Existing bank deposits, new technical form – Balance-sheet money, onchain settlement HSBC tokenized deposits, JPM Coin via Kinexys/Base Same word “tokenized.” Very different legal, regulatory, and monetary realities. 2026 is the inflection point: Not more pilots real integration, trade-offs, and evaluation of which model fits which use case. The question isn’t if banks go onchain. It’s which money they put there.

Bank stablecoin vs tokenized deposits not the same thing They may look identical on-chain, but they live in very different worlds 👇 Bank-issued native stablecoin - New digital cash instrument - Backed by segregated reserves (cash, T-bills, RRP) - Holder has a claim on the reserve pool, not the bank balance sheet - Designed for portability, settlement, and programmability outside core deposits Tokenized deposits - No new money created - Existing bank deposits, represented on-chain - Remain on the bank’s balance sheet & core banking system - Token are technical wrapper for speed and automation Key point: - Stablecoins/deposits legally, regulatorily, or monetarily. - They only create value when moved, not when idle. - And in both models, a bank can run the full stack end-to-end. Same rails. Very different instruments.
