Today was a frustrating day in WBC world for obvious reasons.
But to offer some hope to international baseball fans: no, the WBC is not crumbling. It is far from it.
Rather, the strong reaction is a clear indication of how prestigious and important the tournament has become for fans, players, and federations alike, in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the rest of the baseball world.
Fans are frustrated because they are passionate about their country, and love watching their national team compete at full strength on the world stage. They love experiencing the cultures of 19 other baseball countries, and proudly sharing their own. The WBC is the best event to provide that experience for our sport.
So there will be reform, not dissolution.
The WBC’s popularity has grown exponentially since its inception 20 years ago. And 20 years from now, when every superstar our sport has to offer competing in the Classic is the expectation and the norm, it will be universally seen as the crown jewel of baseball.

I don’t really care what you think you know about fielding at 2nd base Trevor. I only know that you didn’t do it and I did. By you endorsing this stupid drill you clearly don’t know what I know. I do know that you were 6’4” and 248 lbs and threw mid to high 90’s and under achieved at the @MLB level and now you make videos on @YouTube with losers like @KingofJUCO and play @Fortnite I on the other hand was never supposed to make the SHOW as a 30th round draft pick who signed for $2,000 after his senior year of NAIA baseball. I didn’t play 9 years in the Big Leagues because I was physically gifted at 5’9” 160 lbs. I played 9 years and hit (.290) because I was a student of the game and learned how to play on the dirt by some of the best coaches and former players in the game. #shegone
