Funny enough if you look at history most of the time they did pay for them with guns and liquor so that they could go fight the other tribes and then sell them as slaves in both the European and Islam slave trade.
Honestly, African history with outside forces is insanely complex, not just... what Hollywood traditionally shows.
Heck, did you know it was actually rare for Europeans to set foot in African soil over the fact that they could barely survive walking in the terrain so they just hired tribes around the oceans to guide some in or just do the whole things for them.

Funny thing:
About a decade ago, some McD markets had Coke Zero (as one of the two local options) and Diet Coke (the national flavor).
At that time, Coke encouraged us to dump Coke Zero for another local flavor because 95% of people who would order Coke Zero would choose Diet Coke instead. Adding a completely different option would broaden our reach.
Here we are 10 years later getting a completely different message. At some point Coke Zero will overtake Diet Coke.
It's just funny that those markets that pulled it years ago are now trying to play catch-up by establishing Coke Zero in their market. I would said Coke Zero is in about 50% of McD’s nowadays.

@codyfux I have maintained from day one that if audiences gave a damn about a Han Solo origin story movie, they wouldn’t have cared about getting it five months after ‘The Last Jedi’. There was just no interest, especially overseas, and ‘Solo' had nothing else to offer.

For what it’s worth, a $160 million Wed-Sun global opening with identical post-debut legs to SOLO (2.57x = $394 million) would still give MANDALORIAN AND GROGU around $413 million, or exactly 2.5x its reported $165 million budget. Not a smash, but not an IP killer either.

After mixed reviews, industry is cautious, with projections seeing a 65M-75M 3-day weekend in the US & a 75M-85M 5-day opening overseas, for a 140M-160M Global opening. If that becomes the case, it would be similar to #Solo’s 153M Global opening back in 2018.
