Mayor Andrew Knack stated he is deeply disappointed and frustrated by the decision of the Edmonton Police Chief to travel to Israel and the Edmonton Police Commission Chair’s approval of this trip. He noted that for many Edmontonians, the violence in the West Bank and Gaza is not distant, with families grieving and worried about loved ones amid unimaginable hardships. He said decisions like these cause real hurt, damage relationships with communities that already feel marginalized, and break trust. He has asked the commission to review how the current policy on travel is decided, particularly given active travel advisories and sanctions in place, and expects the Edmonton Police Chief and Commission to meaningfully connect with the community to repair broken trust.

Late last night, Premier Danielle Smith and the United Conservative Party chose to force through legislation that invokes the notwithstanding clause to override the Charter rights of transgender and gender-diverse Albertans. It is an extraordinary and deeply alarming use of power to target vulnerable Canadians. This legislation puts lives at risk. It is legislation that will cause lasting, generational harm, especially to young people who are already struggling to survive in a climate of hostility and rising hate. Using the notwithstanding clause pre-emptively, and to curtail the rights of those who too often are pushed to the margins of marginalization, represents a profound departure from the values that built Alberta and define Canada Transgender and gender-diverse individuals are our neighbours, our family members, our coworkers, our classmates and teammates. Canadians deserve to thrive in neighbourhoods that are safe, welcoming, and affirming, they should have unwavering confidence the Charter, and they deserve to live without the fear that a government will single them out for exclusion or erasure. Politicians can invoke the notwithstanding clause, but they cannot extinguish human rights. These rights endure because people defend them and in this moment, Albertans are again called to stand together as neighbours to one another to defend the safety, dignity, and equality of all who call our province home. To every transgender and gender-diverse Albertan, please know that you are valued, you are loved, your existence matters, and you deserve a province, and a country, that protects your rights, not one that strips them away. We will not stop fighting for you.

Danielle Smith’s old chief of staff needed $23,000 for housing. Severely disabled Albertans surviving on AISH live on $23,000 per year. Smith’s UCP government is taking the new $200 federal disability benefit away from AISH recipients saying they get enough. #alberta #cruel

@AmarjeetSohiYEG So when you lose this election, do you think you can just go right back to being mayor? You never cared about our city, and you certainly never cared about our country. You just see us as peons to take advantage of.

@KathrynMathias1 As a person who advocates for common sense answers, this is the most inflammatory tweet out there. You’re leading your “followers” completely blind. All your liberal friends must love to just get behind anything with no understanding hey. Make me eat my words, what was so wrong?

3/ I keep getting asked by conservatives responding on this thread, to say what exactly was so horrible. I'm not going to amplify what Poilievre said and if you don't believe my assessment, you can find it on CPAC and judge for yourself.

Absolutely horrible, some of the inflammatory things Poilievre said at his campaign announcement today. I really worry about the fact he's slinging mud and fearmongering, and has two more weeks to do this. That it could change the trajectory of the current polling.
