@SimonWalker166 @KirstieMAllsopp Not sure how state would buy all the stock? Pretty sure landlords would bite their hand off - many make very little and lose. Taxed properly? LL already effectively taxed on turnover. Also property income is good enough to be taxed but not good enough as earnings. RRB unworkable

@KirstieMAllsopp Are landlords letting at a loss or profit. If it’s at a profit, which it obviously is, then why couldn’t the state replace the private landlord. And if it does, why pay the inflated value that a private landlord wants for their stock when, if taxed properly, the cost reduces?

Some Facts: Over 50% of tenants rent from a private landlord. The Government cannot afford to buy/build that number of homes. Some people will never be able to, or want to, buy their home. If you attack landlords you will reduce the number of homes available to rent.
Kirstie Allsopp@KirstieMAllsopp

Surprise, surprise @wesstreeting is on @BBCr4today bashing landlords. I’ve got news for you mate, we can’t have a “productive nation” without people having homes, so if you want to tax Landlords to hell, I’d build some alternative accommodation first ‘cos you’re going to need it.

@KirstieMAllsopp @wesstreeting @BBCr4today Amazed by some responses. Landlords still up there as lepers. Such an easy target for politicians to bash so called lazy, rapacious, callous landlords. Not all are. Without their properties the rental market shrinks & prices go up for renters. Plus pretty much taxed on turnover.

@lfeatherstone Agree. I get the pros/cons but is it fair that someone who hasn’t been an MP for years can - simultaneously- become an MP, party leader, & PM in a matter of weeks? No TV debates, interviews etc. And as you say - different manifesto. Like ordering a chicken curry & getting salad.

If Burnham gets in and becomes Pm he will have to call an election immediately - as his prospectus is quite different to the one on which this government was elected.

I hope this isn’t true. There are times when it’s more important to put country before party. This is one of them. Burnham’s longstanding commitment to a fairer voting system could transform our democracy & counter dire threat of a Reform UK government theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

@NickFerrariLBC @BBCNews Wow!Andy Burnhams tweet? New depths of sophistry & sanctimony. Not sure our political system is “working” when an individual, w/out being an MP, can become an MP, leader of a party, & PM in a few weeks, simultaneously dumping the people they served

I can confirm that I will be requesting the permission of the NEC to stand in the Makerfield by-election. I grew up in this area and have lived here for 25 years. I care deeply about it and its people. I know they have been let down by national politics. Ten years ago, I decided to leave Westminster. Why? Because, after 16 years, I came to the conclusion that our national political system does not work for areas like ours. I learnt this fighting its failure to invest in the Wigan borough, for justice for the Hillsborough families and against its treatment of Greater Manchester during the pandemic. Over the last decade, I have been challenging this failure from the outside and building a new and better way of doing politics. We have built Greater Manchester into the fastest-growing city-region in the UK and put buses back under public control, introducing a £2 fare cap to help people with cost-of-living pressures. However, there is only so much that can be done from Greater Manchester. Much bigger change is needed at a national level if everyday life is to be made more affordable again. This is why I now seek people’s support to return to Parliament: to bring the change we have brought to Greater Manchester to the whole of the UK and make politics work properly for people. Millions are struggling and they need the Labour Government to succeed. It has already made changes to make life better for them in its first two years. After this week, we owe it to people to come back together as a Labour movement, giving the Prime Minister and the Government the space and stability they need as the by-election takes place. I want to recognise the difficult decision taken by Josh Simons and the sacrifice he and his family are making. I have worked closely with him as Mayor on issues like flooding and illegal waste dumping and have seen first-hand how effective he has been. He has put the communities of Makerfield first, made a real difference for them and should take great pride in that. Finally, I truly do not take a single vote for granted and will work hard to regain the trust of people in the Makerfield constituency, many of whom have long supported our party but lost faith in recent times. We will change Labour for the better and make it a party you can believe in again. ENDS

WORKING FROM HOME ARGUMENT I honestly can’t see the justification for making people return to the office if you are not customer facing/ front line staff You want people to pay excessive amounts on travel, waste hours travelling for what ? To sit next to you while you say 4 words all day. For those who don’t do their work, monitor them and tell them they have to attend the office 4 days a week for a PIP and you’ll see how quickly they’ll improve…. but if someone’s is hitting targets and doing their work, while making it easier to be a better mother or father or carer to elderly parents, by being present doing the school run, attending after school activities on time and getting a home cooked meal prepared for their family why stop that ??

@cristo_radio @CharlotteCGill @AngelaRayner Always going to happen. I can’t even comprehend how policy makers can’t foresee this. It’s bash the landlord under the guise of helping tenants when it fact it helps them with one hand & shafts them with the other. The result? Both landlord & tenants feel the pain & situ worsens.

Everyone deserves a safe, secure place to call home. That’s why I’m so proud that our Labour government is building council homes, while protecting renters from unfair eviction and unaffordable rent increases. Vote Labour this 7 May so we can keep building together 🌹

@sallyjackstvmum @AerLingus Same experience - so years don’t seem to have taught them anything. Customer service don’t understand the law, give different answers, and Lynne Embleton can’t even be bothered to acknowledge an email. Mind you neither can Luis Gallego the IAG CEO so maybe a cultural thing @rte

I've emailed customer services and your CEO Lynne Embleton, I've phoned @AerLingus twice, all been a waste of time. Nobody can give a straight answer. This has been going on since March. Does Aer Lingus know how to handle customers? Please can someone give me the money owed.

@mrjamesob you talk about despicable politicians & standards (true) yet your bias is just as rum - “cretins”, false equivalence in leadership vs inquiry votes, and demonising Kemi. I have no truck with Boris or Kemi yet you are manifesting the solipsism & sophistry you challenge.

@KirstieMAllsopp @ANDIBABY8 Not aware of what advice from Shelter. Totally agree on fewer small landlords that actually manage the property (I’m one) & less humanity as majority of to let will be run by large companies who in turn will run properties purely as a spreadsheet.

@congruitytime @ANDIBABY8 It was, but the advice of Shelter was deemed to be more valuable than the views of “unscrupulous” landlords. No one believed that we needed landlords, that a certain percentage of people want to rent, the result will be fewer small landlords & less humanity in the sector.

Under the new renters rights act. If you give notice because you want to sell, and the sale falls through - you cannot rent it again for a year. How is this going to help the housing shortage? Landlords pay tax on rental income too. I see another black hole appearing!

@NodrogIce @ANDIBABY8 Possibly. But a vacant property during the laborious sales process when mortgage still needs paid has high risk of repossession not to mention a win/win in a housing crises. It’s chiming supply to deal with rogue landlords. Not everyone is.

@ANDIBABY8 Surely you'd just sell it to another buyer in that particular case? You wouldn't just be "oh, it didn't sell to that one person, so I'll rent it out again instead"
