Steil emphasized the need for clear regulations to foster innovation in the U.S. crypto space: “The federal government is already regulating crypto. The difference is whether or not you have a government framework in place to allow innovation and development here in the United States or... allow the administrative state to produce regulations through enforcement actions.” He underscored the importance of innovation happening domestically: “What we want to do is encourage that innovation and development to occur here in the United States of America, rather than allowing it to be stifled and ultimately moved offshore.” On the potential risks of failing to act: “The concern is that [crypto] won’t be a U.S.-based product. It’ll be sitting outside the United States, developed under different standards and operations.” He emphasized blockchain's role in increasing transparency and reducing risks: “Through blockchain, you actually have a huge opportunity to have transparency and visibility into the flow of funds in a way that’s actually better than the current financial system.” He provided historical context on how technology can create more opportunities: “If you really look at what happened with ATMs, tellers didn’t lose their jobs. We actually have more tellers now, and they’re paid more than they were back in the 1970s, even accounting for inflation.
