@NonwayneWayne Far fewer texts per subject for Imogen et al, but I’d say it’s one of the heavier reading loads in Oz right now and that’s an “elite” course at a G08!

US friends and European literature friends, it's still somewhat like this over there, right? We were given two weeks for something like Moby-Dick but, usually, a book each week with an accompanying lecture

When I tell people that English literature subjects (at my regional Australian uni) had 8 books set over a 13 week semester they act like I'm insane. It's like those of us who came through that system are ancient Egyptians having to fend off claims that aliens built the pyramids

@NonwayneWayne My undergrad was more focused on creative writing, but we still had to read several texts in each subject as well as producing creative work. I still remember a class on Australian literature where it was a book a fortnight and they were all brilliant!

In no small way, this article demonstrates how behind the times the academy is in the field of scholarly publishing. You want to avoid rent-seeking behaviour? Archive the accepted version of your article in your institutional repository. Done. abc.net.au/religion/nicho…

@drjpersian Same applies to Ancient History and the Gen English curriculum is sucking my son's will to live. QCAA needs a good talking to!

@drjpersian I've helped one child through 11/12 Modern and now second child is in Yr 11 and I remain baffled by this! It totally backwards, thinking of questions before you dig into sources is mad. The formulaic way to analyse sources starts in Yr 7 and just keeps going.

Pretty exciting when you are the first in your family to finish highschool - in not great circumstances - in regional northern Queensland - and you discover that the Princeton University Library just bought two hardcover copies of your academic book! catalog.princeton.edu/catalog/991291…

@NonwayneWayne I have no fond nostalgia for the exam portion of my undergrad! Chatting to current undergrads, they are lonely and struggling to find the joy we found in full lecture theatres and lively discussion groups.

Am I the only one who mourns the death of the lecture and the exam in the humanities? I loved sitting in packed lectures, and they really felt like being part of a student community. And nothing established a sense of solidarity like exam prep and post mortem.

@thehistoriann @SMCoulombeau Yes! Plenty of Aussie cafes open for 6am, that’s when tradies buy coffee on the way to work, also people out exercising buy coffee then. I can’t imagine not opening until 10 or 11am!

@SMCoulombeau The greatest thing about being back in Australia is very early morning and very good coffee. 6am? We got you! Back in Texas there were a few 24 hour coffee spots but otherwise cafes opened at 10!

Don’t hate me but there’s a real gap in the market for coffee shops willing to open from 6am

@dreamsofskies My realization came when I found out other people don’t think all the time, like not everyone has a constant running stream of thoughts and bits of music and noise….

Regarding ADHD symptoms, I never used to think I had "racing thoughts" because my brain has always processed stuff at around the same speed. How am I supposed to know anyone's thinking speed baseline other than my own?

@willkostakis One, that sucks and they don't deserve you (though their students do). Two, why book you for a presentation if they refuse to let you talk about a MAJOR theme in your writing? The mind boggles.

@librarian_bro My experience in schools is that common sense does prevail, and students who need to access their mobile devices for reasons like a loop system are definitely allowed to do so. Additionally, students often use mobiles for class tasks, and hopefully this will also be allowable!

I can see why they would do this, and I expect #type1 kids who are looping with smartwatch & phone are already an exception in class time? Queensland government confirms blanket mobile phone ban in state schools, bringing it into line with other states abc.net.au/news/2023-07-0…
