💥 Anduril founder @PalmerLuckey tells @demarest_colin on The Axios Show what weapons he would (and wouldn’t) build. “I think that nuclear weapons have been one of the most stabilizing forces in history ever.”

@pa_coyote94151 @axios @PalmerLuckey @demarest_colin Maybe you don't realize that they have bunkers. If you have a brain you know that war is a given, and all Nukes bring to the table is that eventually they will be used. You just haven't lived long enough to experience it so you rush to that very stupid conclusion

Nuclear weapons are the only reason why we didn’t have a war with the Soviet Union or China by now. Maybe even several Mid East countries. World wars stopped when the leaders realized they would be killed and not just soldiers, civilians and others they don’t care about. It’s always about their power, not our lives.

[Unexpected Alliance] At the end of Metal Slug 2, the aliens, who appear to be cooperating with Morden’s Army, suddenly turn on them, capturing Morden with a tractor beam and attacking both forces. Faced with a common enemy, the two sides, who had been locked in a fierce battle just moments before, immediately join forces. The Regular Army and Morden’s Army launch a full-scale assault on the massive alien UFO, the “City Destroyer.” This storyline was a special idea I had been nurturing long before I took charge of planning for Metal Slug 2. It was something I had always hoped to bring to life. Because the game was built around three core pillars, including player transformations like becoming a mummy or turning “fat,” as well as the climactic alliance with Morden’s Army, I had no hesitation in taking the game’s tone in a bold new direction. When I first came up with these ideas, I was genuinely excited and convinced they would surprise fans of the series. Even now, I receive many comments saying, “This is the most emotional scene in the entire series!” I’m simply grateful for that response.

@akio_1963 @Kuichin_1970 I always adored the soldiers in MS1, so I was amazed when you get to team up with them then! I got the feeling the developers really liked the soldiers too, and at the end I was laughing out loud of course.

@daiconlovesyou @NikTek Hard to say without seeing it first-hand but it does seem like a fair price, original SC retailed for 50$ 11 years ago, and having one myself i can say they did cheapen out on some parts to get to that price, if this controller feels as good as the competition it should be worth.

> DualSense Edge costs $199 and comes with potentiometer-based analog sticks that are prone to stick drift (an analog module alone costs $19 when its time to replace them) > Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 is on sale and currently costs $157. It comes with the same type of analog sticks The Steam Controller comes with haptic dual trackpads and drift-resistant TMR magnetic joysticks, yet some people seem to call Steam crazy for pricing it at $99. I never expected this controller to cost anywhere near in the range of $60 to $70. Although $100 isn’t cheap, what you’re getting here is a controller that is going to last much longer than any of these other ones.

I was really hoping for 649 before this hardware costs increases but now I don't expect it to be less than 800 now. I don't think their out of touch, I'm sure their very well in tune

METAL SLUG marks its 30th anniversary. I was around 30 myself when I conceived METAL SLUG, in a reckless attempt to strike a blow against the dominance of fighting games at the time. Back then, I never imagined that idea would still be going strong 30 years later. I worked on METAL SLUG 1 through 3, but after that, many more Metal Slug pixel artists carried the baton forward and kept the game running across generations. For a single game to continue for 30 years is not something its creators alone can achieve. METAL SLUG exists today because of the passion of its creators, the teammates who carried it forward, and above all, all of you who played it again and again and loved it. Your battle record in the long war against Morden's Army is what has sustained METAL SLUG for these 30 years. The game I poured my life into back then is still so eagerly awaited, even now, 30 years later. As a creator, that makes me truly happy, and very proud. And now, the METAL SLUG video that SNK released for the 30th anniversary, hinting at the next phase, has not yet revealed the full picture. Just thinking that a revolutionary, never-before-seen METAL SLUG is finally about to reveal itself makes my heart race, and I can hardly sit still. When that moment comes and its true form is finally revealed, I want to witness it with my own eyes alongside all of you and shout: "HEAVY MACHINE GUN!" #MetalSlug30th #MetalSlug

@Scias_R @Cacophanus I honestly believe it could possibly save costs. If offline is planned then you could continue selling it as an offline product after EOS. This could mitigate some risk. Moreover, I would feel more comfortable buying in-game content if I felt assured it wasn't ethereal or risky.

I disagree. These are artificial barriers to block something that can be easily implemented, and no separate currency would be required. Moreover, if this offline mode is part of a guideline requirement, then it would be able to be included with no extra cost.

Mark Darrah, the former Producer behind Anthem actually gave a nuanced take no this. It's a series of trade offs to choose either a dedicated server versus peer-to-peer. Both have merits, but it's a lot harder to make something into peer-to-peer once it's formalized into a product. I can't imagine EA execs being convinced that it would take $10 million or so to make an offline version of a game that was already a flop. It would earn goodwill with fans, sure...but I guess goodwill doesn't appease the shareholders.

Japanese devs explain why adding offline support to live-service games after shutdown is harder than most gamers think. The discussion started again due to a fan-made offline version of Square Enix’s NieR Re[in]carnation. Programmer Itchie said: “Making it technically work and making it actually enjoyable as a game are different things.” He added: “There is a strong risk that the game will end up playable but not entertaining, or that it will simply fall apart as a game.”

@itchie_tatsumi @JirouOsakabe If we are only considering new games going forward, I like to think new standards could be adopted so that handoff to the end-user is considered in relation to many of these things. Like architecting the servers, making adjustments to licensing, documenting game values, etc.

If the game is no longer going to be available to an audience to purchase, then there is no question of permission management for operations. There shouldn't be any assets under development in there. It's the thing that's currently running. What have you externally contracted for that is licensed if you're no longer supporting the game, then you're no longer responsible for maintaining those licenses. If you have personal information from your creators in the software, that's a bad design decision, and perhaps you shouldn't have done that in the first place. No longer supporting the game? Then you're no longer responsible for the risks of bugs. It can't cause damage to a third party that you're responsible for because you're no longer running it. I was an enterprise software engineer for large operating system deployments for over a decade. I know what it's like to deal with large internal software projects. I also know that most of these concerns are unreasonable. The software has been written. It has been in a state of being maintained if you've been providing an online service. It's been documented, at least to some degree. No one is saying that you have to be responsible for it forever. They are saying that you can stop being responsible for it and give it over into the hands of the public so that it can be preserved, and so that the people who paid for your product can continue to get value out of what they paid for. That's all they're asking. They're simply saying that if you're no longer going to continue giving them the thing they paid for and not going to allow them to continue giving you money in exchange for it, the least you can do is give it to them entirely.

@kkoirrpoqq18jtt @PKPatchworks I see. From my perspective, the post about the Nier server certainly seemed proud of the success and eager to share, but I didn't see it as gloating like some users interpret. For such a niche project, informing others feels more like a community post and less like advertizing.

It's interesting to see the cultural divide at play here. Japanese culture is one that prioritizes order over all else. "Rules are rules for a reason." Piracy is viewed similarly to shoplifting. American culture appreciates order to a degree, but dislikes perceived injustice more than it prioritizes adherence to rules. When overseas markets make no effort to sell a product to them legitimately, or make it inaccessable, they then view piracy similarly to someone who peeks through a fence to watch a baseball game. From a historical standpoint, one could reasonably say that Cowboys and Samurai were also physical manifestations of this same spirit.

Seeing more coments from japanese people, I realized this is not actually the case....... there is some level of hypocrisy going on. What made them pissed off was not that the west was breaking rules, was that they were breaking rules and being public about this. For them its important to show that you are being opressed by the laws, even if you are not following them... Talking to a lot of japanese ppl this last day was such a a learning experience....
