Went to the bank today to take out some cash and saw 3 receipts at the ABM I was at. One had a $215 balance, another had a $25 balance, and the 3rd had a $-40 balance. So 3 people combined had a total balance of $200. Sad. Canadians aren’t thriving, they’re barely surviving.

Andrés is my favorite player ever. From the very first moment he showed up at my Leones del Caracas in the Venezuelan baseball league until the day retired. He had two great seasons in Montreal offensively and defensively but he K’d a lot and in those days K’s were a sin so they tried to reduce them and screwed him up. The Expos let him go and he signed with the Cards, unfortunately a pitch broke his wrist in like the sixth game of the season (I’m doing all this from memory) and lost half a season. He came back and hit relatively well but the Cards and Joe Torre decided he wasn’t part of the future and he got less and less playing time. They let him go too and the expansion Rockies signed him (there was a lot of talk at the time about him signing with the also expansion Marlins but they decided that Orestes Destrade was a better option) and the rest is history. He got the Rockies first hit in their history and then won the batting title (Tony Gwynn did not approve) and boy was Colorado baseball fun! He then won the HR title with 47 (in those days nobody had hit 50 in forever) and the RBI title with 150 by getting 3 in the last game of the season. He then signed with the Braves and had another great season, lost another to cancer and came back hitting a homer in his first game. His time with the Rockies were before the internet exploded and I had to read the two-days old scores in the paper. Nothing made me happier than seeing A. Galarraga 2-4. HR. 3RBI which seemed to happen a lot those days. I’ve really enjoyed the Galarraga talked and I want to thank this account and others like @notgaetti for it. Many others have done it too and all of you get my appreciation. All this talk brought that kid in Venezuela finishing high school and obsessed with baseball, he’d been gone for a while and it’s nice to say hello to him. “How can you not be romantic about baseball?!”
