At the end of med school, my family ran out of money. I was embarrassed In residency, I forbeared on loans and they went up by 150% I was financially illiterate. The stress was real. It shouldn’t be this way. Here are 5 reasons financial literacy MUST be in medical training:

@sebsuarezmd The best solution is a smart spreadsheet that makes your work easy, checks for errors, and ensures the schedule is fair. That’s what the spreadsheet I designed does.

@sebsuarezmd Even when a computer struggles to solve something, sometimes the human brain can still do it well. Like chess. Massive computing power and smart algorithms can overcome that though. Again, like AlphaZero and chess. Sadly, nobody has asked AlphaZero to solve resident scheduling.

@Optum_Support Patient's insurance drug benefit switches from @ExpressScripts to @OptumRx and suddenly a medication he has been on for years is denied, even after appealing. Unbelievable that this type of thing can happen.

@eemoin I assume you also calculated how much you would have made by investing your 401k in the S&P 500 over that time period and not spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on medical school too?

@eemoin So true, and if you click too fast the GUI has a delayed shift and you end up clicking the wrong button, resulting in further delays. Basic GUI design failure.

@dankirsh That’s great. But it was their job to approve the test based upon your documentation without making you call to again prove that the test you ordered is indicated.

I had the friendliest peer-to-peer call today. He started with, "Hi Dr. K, how I can help your test be approved today?" He quickly read my note, told me it made sense, approved the test, and said he would bump it up for review to avoid this mistake in the future. Refreshing.

@MarkELindsay I don’t do it when I know which hospital. If I don’t know which hospital and it’s not important to figure it out for the specific situation, I might write OSH to save time. Rarely happens.

It is a peak fruit experience. Paul, you don’t have that excuse, unfortunately. Apples are great, so are pears. A perfect mango beats a perfect anything.
