if she was any good at product then she would work at a company that builds products

Sequoia's Chief Product Officer, @jesskah, won't hire well-rounded people. She looks for a "spikes" in 1 of 4 traits that predict success: • EQ: One-on-one people skills • IQ: Raw intellectual horsepower • PQ: Ability to navigate politics/systems • JQ: Judgment on decisions that matter In this week's episode of The Library of Minds, we went deep on how this framework shaped her journey from Google PM to Polyvore CEO to Sequoia’s Chief Product Officer. Jess explains why velocity is the strongest early predictor of product-market fit, how choosing the wrong business model was her biggest mistake as a founder, and why she now believes AI will spark a new wave of consumer media. 00:00 Intro 1:00 Who is Jess Lee 02:50 The EQ / IQ / PQ / JQ framework 03:44 What early Google taught her 05:35 When ambition becomes a weakness 07:34 Customer discovery vs visionary intuition 09:31 Polyvore: from user → CEO 12:37 Imposter syndrome & finding authentic leadership 15:20 Picking the wrong market 18:24 Firing fast & setting high performance bars 20:12 Building cult-like community and emotional loyalty 22:13 Velocity vs delight in product 24:32 What she looks for in founders (turn-based velocity) 25:59 The business model wake-up call 27:27 Storytelling as a founding superpower 28:26 Hot take: consumer isn’t dead, it’s being reborn 31:50 AI-generated media, fanfic, and the next YouTube Grateful to be working with her at @withdelphi !

paraphrasing voltaire, the trouble with trump's protectionist re-industrialization agenda is that it isn't protectionist, re-industrializing, or an agenda we're openly trading the components driving GDP; failing to restore manufacturing; and doing policy on dry-erase boards

Trump is pursuing a protectionist economic policy with a massive carve out for AI, where admin policy is quite globalist so what you’ve got is a proudly “anti-globalization” agenda nestled inside a de facto pro-globalization AI agenda that’s actually driving the economy
Joey Politano 🏳️‍🌈@JosephPolitano

NEW from me: In his 2nd term, Trump has pursued the largest trade war in modern US history—with 1 glaring omission. Computer imports remain nearly entirely exempt from tariffs It's a special carveout that AI companies are now entirely reliant on for their data center buildout🧵

Steph Curry’s trainer says his explosiveness and first-step are faster than ever 👀 “His first-step quickness and explosiveness is the fastest that it's ever been, if not faster. But as players age, the one thing they can do is continue to work on processing information fast and make faster decisions to offset any gap that is created with losing a step. That hasn’t happened with him yet. So when you combine the fact that physically he’s still at a peak and now he’s making decisions faster, we have a very quick player out there.” (via @TheRGMedia, h/t @sidelinesources)

Social media is a failed project. In a few years it'll just be AI content farms feeding slop short form videos to AI fake accounts. And the ad revenue and compute costs that this involves will be a tax we humans pay to keep the monsters bottled up in that realm.

When the press lost its monopoly on news, it pivoted from journalism into tribalism. The new role of the press is not to inform its readers but to confirm what they already believe.

Ezra Klein on Charlie Kirk: “You can dislike much of what Kirk believed and the following statement is still true: Kirk was practicing politics in exactly the right way. He was showing up to campuses and talking with anyone who would talk to him. He was one of the era’s most effective practitioners of persuasion. When the left thought its hold on the hearts and minds of college students was nearly absolute, Kirk showed up again and again to break it. Slowly, then all at once, he did. College-age voters shifted sharply right in the 2024 election. “That was not all Kirk’s doing, but he was central in laying the groundwork for it. I did not know Kirk and I am not the right person to eulogize him. But I envied what he built. A taste for disagreement is a virtue in a democracy. Liberalism could use more of his moxie and fearlessness. In the inaugural episode of his podcast, Gov. Gavin Newsom of California hosted Kirk, admitting that his son was a huge fan. What a testament to Kirk’s project.” “Kirk and I were on different sides of most political arguments. We were on the same side on the continued possibility of American politics. It is supposed to be an argument, not a war; it is supposed to be won with words, not ended through bullets. I wanted Kirk to be safe for his sake, but I also wanted him to be safe for mine, and for the sake of our larger shared project. The same is true for Shapiro, for Hoffman, for Hortman, for Thompson, for Trump, for Pelosi, for Whitmer. We are all safe, or none of us are.”

in september we’ll land in one of three buckets with our first product launch: 1) it changes the game (dream outcome) 2) nobody cares (also amazing outcome) 3) people feel “meh” (worst fucking outcome, death by mediocrity) polarized outcomes create clarity. the middle will trap you. we will aim to create a polarizing outcome.

this is the classic productivity cosplay. the people yelling “9-9-6, steak & eggs, marry early” aren’t actually grinding… they’re LARPing because they confuse aesthetics for substance. anyone prescribing this vibe is a loser, anyone bragging about hours worked is compensating. real signal is actually in results, not dumb rituals.
