Following the beating, he lost consciousness and was left unattended for hours as white ambulance crews refused to assist him. He was eventually taken to the hospital by an ambulance designated for Bląck patients. The incident took place in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1961. At the hospital, Zwerg simply stated, "Segręgation must be stopped. It must be broken down." He's still alive today at the ripe age of 85.
