The suit, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., claims Trump’s executive order violates freedom of speech, press, and association, and defies the will of Congress, which has long funded public broadcasting through bipartisan legislation. Trump’s May 1 executive order seeks to cut off funding to both NPR and PBS, accusing them of political bias. However, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)—the nonprofit that allocates those funds—was designed to operate independently of presidential control. CPB has also sued the Trump administration after the president tried to remove board members. PBS is preparing its own legal challenge.
