او ژنرال زو باوگوئی (左宝贵 • Zu Baogui) نام داشت؛ مردی که در سال ۱۸۹۴ برای دفاع از متحد سنتی چین (دودمان چوسان کره) در برابر تهاجم ژاپن، به پیونگیانگ اعزام شد و در همان نبرد تا آخرین نفس ایستاد.
اما قبل از آنکه به میدان برود، یک نظامیِ خیرخواه بود:
مدارس رایگان برای کودکان فقیر تأسیس کرد.
آشپزخانههای عمومی برای تغذیهٔ بینوایان راه انداخت.
مراکز واکسیناسیون آبله و پرورشگاه برای یتیمان ساخت.
چندین مسجد را در شهرهای مختلف بازسازی و حمایت مالی کرد.
در روز نبرد، در حالی که فرماندهٔ کل ارتش گریخت، زو باوگوئی پیش از جنگ غسل کرد، لباس رسمی پوشید و شخصاً توپ را نشانهگیری کرد.
قویترین و مشهورترین نقل قول او، زمانی بیان شد که برخی از فرماندهان ترسو پیشنهاد فرار از پیونگیانگ را مطرح کردند. او در پاسخ به آنها فریاد زد:
«اگر شما از مرگ میترسید، میتوانید بروید، اما این شهر، آرامگاهِ من خواهد بود!»
و سرانجام، با اصابت ترکش توپ، به شهادت رسید و شد نخستین ژنرال چینی که در جنگ با ژاپن شهید شد.
امروز، او نه تنها یک قهرمان ملی چین، بلکه نماد وحدت اقوام مختلف این کشور است. او مایهٔ افتخار تمام مردم چین و به ویژه جامعهٔ مسلمانان چین است.
دولت فعلی چین نیز او را به عنوان یک «قهرمان ملی» و «نماد وحدت اقوام» میستاید.
مردی که هم شمشیر زد، هم مدرسه ساخت؛ هم از میهن دفاع کرد، هم به فقرا رسیدگی کرد.
یادآوری چنین شخصیتهایی، راهی برای پاسداشت ارزشهای مشترک انسانی مانند ایثار و خدمت به مردم است.
