@jeffsatoms Renting decent fields is not cheap. Tournament fees are not cheap. League fees are not cheap. Clubs have to pay coaches and trainers, buy kits, rent practice fields, pay refs for games. All of this adds up quickly. Most clubs are non-profit. Nobody's getting rich.

As much as I hate to agree with Alexi Lalas, he isn't wrong. "Get rid of pay for play" as a solution to U.S. Soccer's problems has two flaws:
1) MLS clubs' youth players already mostly aren't paying.
2) Soccer costs money and someone has to pay for it. If not parents, then who?

@AlexiLalas There are 6 European countries in the WC QFs. This suggests their models of talent identification and development are currently the most effective. None of those countries see the provision of training as a commercial proposition. This may be the problem.

One big US soccer thought: our youth development has to get more affordable. One of my kids plays travel. It’s at least $5k a year & this isn’t even super high end. We can afford it, thankfully, lots can’t. Youth sports costs in the US are out of control, soccer more than most.

@Fat_Jacques @BarrieCrampton Suspect this is rarer than you think. The BIK on the card is high, so it pays to reimburse your employer for your personal miles, so you are - usually- better off plugging the thing in.

@Eyeswideopen69 My club has gone from barely having enough to put out a Saturday side to 2 U9s, 4 u11s, 2 u13s, 2 u15s, 2 Saturday and 2 Sunday sides in the last 10 years. The kids will play if you give them the opportunity. Get yourself on the ECB core coach course and do something about it.

I only just learned that when Brits say “pants” they don’t actually mean pants.
They mean underwear.
Why they don’t specify the “under” part, we will never know. But they invented the language so we have to bite our tongue.
