@RrobynneUK It's one of the most embarrassing mistakes of my life, but I believe in transparency! I'd been using it carefully for a while and it hadn't mistakenly deleted even one file, so I got complacent. Then it deleted everything & didn't use the recycle bin (which it always had before).

@slatestarcodex @ohabryka @RatOrthodox Hope everyone involved can hash this out. I like your tweets a lot and think they are very valuable on average, though I understand this site can rot brains and I have noticed you acting a tad more bad faith than I expect of you at times. I hope you can find a nice balance.

I have the idiotic personality flaw that I believe if I just explain myself well enough, everyone will agree that I am being fair and that everything was a misunderstanding. I agree this is stupid, and one in many points in favor of deleting my Twitter account and never coming back to this godforsaken place. Offer to Discord still stands.

Relevant to the recent Robby / Scott exchange. I thought Robby did a pretty bad job of representing the views of EA folks, and kind of an even worse job of presenting the complex spikiness of their various intellectual virtues and vices. But I also felt pretty deeply gaslit by Scott's post. My guess is that Scott just hasn't experienced the being shutdown or asked to shut up explicitly because he is high status, and hasn't noticed the implicit ways that similar local cultural forces make him (according to my read, not super confident) kind of psychologically incapable of forming inside views about AI x-risk. I have much sympathy for both, even though I think both posts were pretty bad.

I regret not becoming more of an outspoken troublemaker sooner. I had way too much trust and fear of fucking up plans I didn’t understand. Perhaps we would have been in a better position to deal with this mess if I had had more hubris. I’d never seen how the x risk reduction sausage was made. If you haven’t either, believe me, it’s not a process you should feel comfortable deferring to. I don’t recommend assuming everyone’s an idiot or that they’re all corrupt, they’re not, which makes matters worse. Many are some of the most intelligent and thoughtful people I’ve ever met. But also please do not assume that they’ve already taken everything you might’ve thought of into account, even if you can’t easily articulate it, perhaps especially if you can’t easily articulate it. Do not assume they have well thought out plans that wouldn’t seem obviously idiotic to you if you saw all of the cognition involved. Do not worry that they just have better taste than you. Do not fear for fucking up their plans. If their plans are really that important, and you really might fuck them up, then let them explain to you why, and listen carefully but also with some caution that they are trying to silence or disempower you because you are upsetting a balance of power that has them on top. And most of all, be suspicious of your own motivations for not wanting to step on any toes. I would have indeed been invited to the cool parties or gotten the cool jobs or whatever the fuck less often if I had become more of a troublemaker sooner. Being in the inner ring was always very alluring to me, but that was basically fucking stupid and shortsighted. I would be and feel cooler now if I had started sooner even if there were a valley to cross. I feel angry at myself for not seeing this earlier and it is perhaps not very good advice for most people, and perhaps worded a bit too harshly, but I wish somebody had said it to me a decade ago. P.S. This is not an excuse to be an asshole or to not hold love and kindness in your heart and don’t lose the ability to coordinate with people you disagree with because that’s also extremely costly. See ya on the other side.

@xlr8harder Magic is objectively superior to Yu-Gi-Oh because you can use MTG to simulate a game of YGO but you can't use YGO to simulate a game of MTG.

Peanuts in Coke is one of the most accidentally perfect food pairings in history, and the chemistry explains why this guy can't go back. Coca-Cola sits at pH 2.5, roughly the same acidity as stomach acid. When you drop roasted peanuts into that, the phosphoric acid partially denatures the surface proteins on the nut, releasing free glutamate. You're generating umami in real time inside the glass. The salt on the peanuts suppresses bitter taste receptors on your tongue, which amplifies your perception of sweetness without adding a single gram of sugar. Coca-Cola already has 39g of sugar per can. Your brain registers it as even sweeter because the salt is clearing the noise from competing flavor signals. Then carbonation does two things. CO2 dissolved in liquid forms carbonic acid, which triggers pain receptors (TRPA1), not taste receptors. That mild irritation resets your palate between sips so you never get flavor fatigue. Every sip hits like the first. Second, the bubbles physically agitate the peanut surface, accelerating the protein breakdown and glutamate release. The longer the peanuts sit, the more umami you extract. The fat content seals it. Peanuts are 49% fat by weight. Fat is the only macronutrient that activates CD36 receptors, which your brain interprets as richness and satisfaction. Mix that with sugar, salt, acid, umami, and carbonation and you've accidentally triggered every major reward pathway in the human taste system simultaneously. Georgia farmers in the 1920s did this because they needed one hand free while working. They stumbled into the optimal salt-acid-umami-fat-carbonation loop a century before food science could explain why it worked.

@vik_rad48594 @Creative_Combos Wait so you can put Kirol's ability on the stack consumimg only the copies of Don and Leo's trigger repeatedly and keep the original Don and Leo trigger on the stack so you can keep copying it? That's kinda crazy

@Creative_Combos So you trigger Don and Leo targeting Kirol and your artifact creature, tap kirol and the artifact copying the trigger, they blink and untap, you tap them again copying the copied trigger, repeat? Very simple and cool combo!

@chefcauli @rumskibb @Livemimeshow @zunzetrider I think it's a little deceptive to hide the reason you messaged them (recognizing them) and they probably have a right to know from the outset. If I was in that position, I wouldn't think it was weird. But if I found it weird, I would *especially* want to know from the start
