@delucinator if you mean 2015/16, I'd say: imo>>ioi>>ipho ioi got more competitive recently afaik, but it used to be very doable; kind of regret not focusing on it more instead of math+ its more fun when it comes to ipho, it's less competitive since less ppl go beyond ioi/imo

Playing devil's advocate here, but one can argue that chains have the capacity to change the underlying stablecoin used on their chain on a whim. At least I rememeber a lot of chatter around ppl speculating that Tron will replace USDT. fwiw though, I think it's more of a move to long narrative than actual fundamental business sector; 'trillions'

Many generalist funds that missed the early stablecoin deals are now playing catch-up by investing in stablecoin L1s. The logic is understandable: invest in the picks-and-shovels to gain horizontal exposure to stablecoins. I think they may be overlooking...

We were early backers of @tether, @circle & @Paxos Now every fund is bullposting stablecoin data $300B+ stables, $33T of volume etc But there’s been surprisingly little business analysis Who makes money? Who doesn't? Why? I pulled together our thinking below👇

@knveth Later 24/early 25, I started to think that crypto sector was just ahead of the curve, and trad tech started to catch up. Startup of version of Japanification. Throughout last few years, crypto talked more about profitability than AI sector...

The funny thing is that as a customer, whenever I read that the AI dev tools company is profitable I stop using it in favor of the one which is burning money. If cursor claims that their margins are better while Claude Code costs Anthropic 5k per 200$ sub, why use Cursor? Switching cost is very low between all of them, so might as well always favor the product which is willing to burn as much money as possible on users

@mdudas In all fairness, it worked great with Phantom, and was one of the things that made Solana such a good product in late 2021

extremely risky for l1's to aggressively try to make winners with capital, co-marketing and privileged technical support rather than amplify organic winners

All the comparisons between Coinbase’s and Hyperliquid’s headcount completely misunderstand their user bases. Similar revenue or volume numbers do not mean they are the same business. And I also would not say Hyperliquid is "better" than Coinbase just because it has a lower headcount. As it stands today, Coinbase is a far more defensible business, not only because of the regulatory moat, which is massive, but also because it is a household name. They have roughly 20-40x more monthly users than Hyperliquid. That naturally means higher costs across marketing, customer support, compliance, infrastructure, etc. But it also means Coinbase is exponentially more likely to be recognized by your dad than Hyperliquid, while Hyperliquid's userbase is a lot more fleeting.

I dont think inference becoming cheaper solves it either because ppl will just ship more.

One sad realization I’m having is that becoming a developer is getting more costly. One of the best parts of the internet was how equalizing it was. I was able to learn to code and start shipping as a kid in Ukraine with far fewer disadvantages compared to someone in NYC than ever before. But as coding becomes more agentic, it will become more and more expensive to create, and one of the greatest aspects of the software era could fade away.

In college I was always confused by people memorizing leetcode and quant problems. Coming from math/cs competitions, that felt backwards & inefficient. Now, these ppl seem to be first on the chopping block. Problem solving/product/design intuition matters more than ever vs memorization.
