I started with BBSes playing LoRD I used red boxes and acoustic couplers at payphones I used gopher and IRC I moved on to CompuServe and Prodigy I attended the birth of AOL I installed Slackware from floppies on my 486 I've watched the evolution of it all, and I'm honestly surprised it took this long for the collective governments of the world to finally start removing all remaining anonymity from personal devices and the internet. Soon, you will no longer be allowed to own a powerful personal computer without a government permit and their backdoors (if you can even afford one). You will no longer be allowed to use any "unofficial" or offline AI. Watch some of Ellison's speeches from decades ago to see where we're going. The future is thin client PCs/phones for the masses, and all compute will be performed in the cloud where it can be inspected for things that may harm children or hurt the government's feelings. Possessing unauthorized computer equipment and running unauthorized software will mean decades in prison, because they have to set an example. I don't see how this isn't right around the corner.
