It is precisely this kind of narrow minded chauvinistic attitude, that prevents South Canara from emerging as the silicon beach that it claims to be. My ancestors were in Manipal from shortly after independence and I am proud of what has emerged so far. However it will never be a Cupertino or Seattle unless its locals stop curbing youth's natural expressions. Shutting down pubs and simply singing at Bhajan mandiras, will not lead to economic growth.

India attracts only ~9 million foreign tourists a year which is roughly the same number as annual visitors to the Louvre alone. Vietnam, a far smaller country, attracted more than double this number last year. Why does a country of our scale and tourism potential remain such an underperformer on the global tourism dashboard?
