I don’t know exactly what’s going on here, but it does feel AI-related. Unlike PM and eng, which started growing in 2024 (two years post-ChatGPT), design didn’t. If I had to venture a theory, I’d say that because AI is allowing engineers to move so quickly, there’s less opportunity—and less desire—to involve the traditional design process. That said, you’d think design would become a differentiator as more products compete for attention. Something to think about for your company! We’ll keep watching this trend and AI’s impact on org design more generally. One interesting observation we made when we went a level deeper: the ratio of demand for PMs vs. designers has flipped. In mid-2023, we went from more open designer roles to more open PM roles. And ever since, PM demand has been pulling away (currently 1.27x). This will be another trend to monitor, in terms of how AI is reshaping org design.

For me the best way to think about this: snorkel, don’t scuba. Diving too deep is a bit dangerous, and people get lost down there. Take glances at what’s beneath (lots of pretty fish!) from near the surface, and then get back to work. Wherever your motivation comes from (revenge, fear, competition, love of the game, learning, impact) is fine - harness it and get moving. I personally do some journaling (appreciations, write out goals, figure out what I want to get done tomorrow, etc) but then stop procrastinating and get after it.

Europe should have double the number of billionaires and would do if it didn't regulate as much.

There’s nothing admirable about joining the winning team. Somewhere along the way we started confusing success with surrender. We started applauding people not for what they made but for who acquired them…
Maybe I grew up so different here but I don’t see the appeal?
Let’s bring back some real punks. Not the aesthetic but the principle behind. Let’s celebrate interesting work above everything else. People with an opinion and the willingness to stick with it because it’s who they are and they can’t imagine doing it any other way.
I hope we can make independence cool again.
The sellouts will always be fine. They don’t need our admiration too.
