People love the buffer between walking and general traffic and projects often go hand in hand to improve both, especially at side roads where turns often become much slower and safer for all.

NYC was an early adopter of protected bike lanes and started tracking the outcomes. After their 8th & 9th Ave projects were complete, locally-based businesses saw retail sales soar. Residents are going to spend money somewhere, but they're drawn to safer streets. 💰💰💰

@Boenau Often, yes. But you still need to account for seasonal weather that makes biking infeasible. Also, bike lanes need protection by something more deterrent to vehicles than a painted line.

@PierreVairo @doclangers It was. There was a painted outline there for at least 3 or 4 years prior. Then this unraised concrete thing was put in. Note that this corridor is an important walking and cycling route to the station, connecting it to major parks, sporting and recreation venues.
