Correct: when the Democrats won full control of the Virginia state gov't for the first time in 27 years in 2019, the very first thing they did was... not pass a counter-gerrymander against Republicans.
Instead, they passed a state constitutional amendment setting up an independent redistricting commission, and they gave up the power to draw districts entirely.
What resulted was messy, but gave Virginia a lot of competitive districts that neither side particularly liked, but publicly admitted were fair.
That was a very public exercise of civic virtue and anyone opposed to partisan gerrymandering should commend them for it.

The Trump Justice Department has demanded the identities of every worker who staffed the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia, according to court records reviewed by NYT.
The demand targets employees of Fulton County elections as well as volunteer poll workers, who likely numbered in the thousands during the 2020 election.

What is happening in Louisiana right now is both a redistricting power grab and a dry run for authoritarian election subversion this Fall. The governor has declared a state of emergency to suspend the congressional elections because he doesn't like the current map.
