This is an annoying stretch for the Yankees. It’s frustrating to watch but it isn’t remotely close to a referendum on this team IMO. I think it’s clear they lack bullpen depth. That’s the one current flaw. Everything else is just frustrating baseball stuff. It will get better.

I posted this last night and a bunch of people got in the replies/quotes asking me if I’ve ever heard of Kevin Brown. Kevin Brown is maybe the one guy from the 90s who threw a sinker that rivals what guys throw today. But you know who else throws a 98mph sinker? Jack Kochanowicz. Hand up - I had no idea who he was until I saw him as the listed starter for today’s game. It’s not just the premier guys throwing pitches that move at angles and speeds that seemingly defy physics. It’s also the #4 SP on a team that’s not likely to get even close to making the playoffs. That’s the difference.

I’m not going to lie, my jaw dropped watching that first pitch. This is why guys don’t hit .300 anymore. I can’t remember one guy from the 90s or early 2000s who could throw 95 with that much late arm side movement. And he also throws a sweeper, curve, cutter and changeup that you need to be prepared for. When you do hit it, teams usually have their fielders positioned exactly where you normally hit it to. It’s the same sport, but a completely different game compared to what it was 20 years ago and beyond. Anyone who tries to pretend otherwise is insane.

Trent Grisham might be my favorite player right now His entire game is based around NOT sprinting He only walks, homers, and hits rocket singles so he can jog to first base On defense he knows exactly what speed he needs to jog so that he can get to flyballs barely in time

Unless Ben Rice is nursing a hidden injury, he should be starting every game. He’s hitting .362/.508/.745. Nick Kurtz hit .197/.261/.423 vs. LHP in 2025. Are they sitting him against lefties?

The platoon stuff with Ben Rice has to stop. He got a hit off a lefty last night. He should be hitting against Reid Detmers. The whole point is to get Ben ready for big matchups against guys like Crochet, Skubal, Valdez, etc. He’s one of the best hitters in the league.

Wanna say one more time, you can say whatever you want about all the valid criticisms you can have about this group ≈ 15 games into the season, but even as they’ve gone through the worst stretch of offense we’ve seen them since March 2025, this group has fought every late game that they’ve lost and hasn’t given up. And I feel like that’s something, to me, builds an identity they didn’t have as much last year let alone this early into the year.
