@ekaneomics

I profess to understand economics and explain lessons distilled from that field. I also like movies.

@QuasLacrimas I keep waiting for "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" to be redone. Such a great story and script, but the makeup for the bookends are atrocious by modern standards, and they didn't even use the amazing song that was written specifically for the movie.

Many great WWII novels and scripts were written by people who were there and saw it all with their own eyes. The studios should bite the bullet and re-film old classic movies (1960-1990) from the same script but see what they can do with modern acting and effects

I feel like we've reached the end of WW2 movies. All of the interesting stories have been told. Now we get movies about black women sorting mail in England and the meteorologist that did the weather forecast for D-Day.

@DukePrettiGood @politicalmath Even if you're on break, you can point and say "Over on Aisle X". It's not like he hunted him down to the break room, he was literally just the first employee he saw as he walked in the front doors.

@ekaneomics @politicalmath Nah as a former retail worker I gotta side with the employee on this one. People are too goddamned demanding when you're on break. They see a uniform and think you're supposed to dance for them. Retail would be great if it weren't for the customers.

It's funny to me what experiences cause people to abandon a brand Ten years ago, I was taking my kids to the beach. I stopped by Jersey Mike's to grab some food for the fam. They took my order but neglected to mention that they had just taken a 20 sandwich order from the guy in front of me. I had already paid. I waited for my food. I checked on my kids (still in the van). I waited. I asked how long. They said "almost". It was not almost. It took 40 minutes. My kids were crying. The entire trip was ruined. I have not been back to Jersey Mike's. I will never go back x.com/SandyofCthulhu…

@zapad1981 @politicalmath Luckily for my future uncle, grandpa was mostly joking, but he certainly got a moment to remember for the rest of his life. Poor guy was so scared and confused. All my family who were there remember the look on his face as grandpa went from zero to sixty in 2 seconds flat.

@MorgonAuthor Had a similar reaction to Wicked (especially part 2). It feels like it would be incomprehensible without having seen the Judy Garland movie, but it also makes no sense to be occurring alongside it.

I lived in a small midwestern college town. Had stayed at ~9k population since 1920, so everything was walkable distance. Wife and I walked to the bars, the restaurants, work. It really opened my eyes to how much easier and low-stress life can be. And yet, most townies still drove everywhere. College students would drive from their dorm to go one block to the academic building, taking longer to find parking than it would to just walk. Absolute insanity.

Was out of the dating game years before visiting and living in Europe, and even took note of this. It's unreal how cheap it is to be social in Europe. And that's not just on prices, although they really help. Everything from the walkability of everything to the abundance of public spaces and low-cost fine arts entertainment... Different world.

Jesus Christ man, dating is so expensive in America. Guy spends $40-50 per public date for a "chance" to sleep with the girl. MEANWHILE the dive bar 10 minutes from my house (by foot) has comfy couches/a dark interior/cozy ambience, perfect for dates. A beer costs €3. Times 2, that's €6. I wouldn't go above €12, or 2 rounds of drinks. So that's the budget. BUT European girls usually buy their own drinks, so in practice it's less than €10. My concern with public dates isn't the cost, but the frame; I'm very scared of having my time wasted and also to feel like a free clown for her evening.
D.S.™@DSmith27

@aruvinchan Good breakdown. But what’s your budget if you’re forced to these public dates? If I’m forced to take a chick out to get to know her, my budget is happy hour drinks at most and MAYBE an appetizer and no more than $40-$50.

@jaysonyork In your opinion, would there be a way to strengthen and improve "small group" practices?

Unpopular pastoral opinion: Losing the midweek gathering of the church and replacing it with “small groups” in homes on various nights has been a net negative for the fortification and mission of the church. There are positives, there are negatives. Overall, it’s been an L.

@KrisSchnee @HariSel57511397 This is touched upon in Asimov's Empire novels. Earth (long forgotten as humanity's birthplace) is basically ignored by the empire, with only a token governor for imperial presence. They're allowed a lot of leeway since they're so low-population nobody would notice if it vanished

@HariSel57511397 I've seen a funny analysis of the bureaucracy of a "galactic empire". We don't think 535 elected representatives adequately listen to 300M+ people; try getting the attention of the Galactic Senate several tiers above your continent-scale government!

@LabGrownNeet @ReubenR80027912 My first boss told me this when she hired me as an adjunct. I told her not to worry, as im not that handsome or that much of a casanova. She just shook her head at me. It only took a year before I got my first "stalker" who would hang out in the hall outside my office.

@LabGrownNeet @ReubenR80027912 One of the first things I learned as a college instructor is: as long as you're clean, don't have a physical deformity, and aren't actively rude, some PYT will start crushing on you, just because of 3x a week contact, you having a decent job, and being an authority.

I’m always amazed *women* do not understand the huge degree to which 43 year old men, who are stressed out lawyers and don’t really go the gym are NOT a romtaic ideal for some 19yr old Swede Like in what world is a guy wearing 2018 style talking his Whisky collection make her 🥵

An Au Pair is a broke usually hot 20 something year old girl with an accent who moves across the world to move into your house and act as an unpaid servant for access to a temporary visa. The male equivalent would be like moving Tom Cruise in his prime into your garage to work on cars and flex his muscles while cleaning the pool

@KateBMwriting I was on a hiring committee 2021 (Pre-AI). Was eye-opening how many people wrote a unique letter, and how many had a fill-in-the-blank generic format. Even though we only had ~24 applications, it gave me enough experience to write some awesome letters when I switched jobs later.
