Schools are terrified of teaching morals. It's too controversial, too liable to upset someone. So they punt entirely, and leave moral formation to whatever fills the void. Which turns out to be porn, video games, TikTok, and influencer culture. We've created an entire generation being raised by algorithms because institutions were too cowardly to talk about virtue.

We used what we now call the "science of reading" before we knew what the science of reading was or that it existed. Knowing the gory details of how a child learns is neither necessary nor sufficient for being a good teacher.
