@AndroidAuth I sort of feel bad that I didn't feed back any negative opinions during beta, but, hey, they wouldn't have changed anything would they

I haven't ever equivocated or hedged my bets about whether Keir Starmer should remain Prime Minister. I've always been clear: he must stay. Here's why.

Keir Starmer “We will block the far right from travelling to the Britain for Tommy Robinson's event on Saturday” Fantastic news but why won’t you ban it? It’s clearly an Islamophobic event to intimidate us. As Muslims, our message is - Enough is enough.

Speech was clearly heartfelt. Nonetheless 1) PM claimed that “incremental changes” won’t cut it. But on Europe, centrepiece of the speech, that is precisely what he’s proposing. Did not articulate more transformative change in any area. 2) PM rightly identifies how different politics in the late 2020s is. It is a fight against those who fight in primary colours, who would alter the character of British democracy. The stakes are high “a very dark path” ahead. But those stakes are the very reason his MPs wonder whether they must replace him- that he isn’t the man to fight it.

Starmer set himself a hostage to fortune. These make or break speeches can almost never make, unless there is a genuinely surprising proposal. There wasn’t one in there- as is evidenced by fact all the Qs instantly return to leadership process questions.

It’s interesting that Starmer in his speech blamed Brexit for all Britain’s problems. What he should have said was that he and the previous govt have proved incapable of running the country without the backing of the EU. That is the truth of the matter…… Brexit cannot work because this crop of politicians are incapable of doing the job without their EU masters If only we had known that in 2016 🙄

I voted for Keir Starmer. I’ve voted Labour all my life except under Corbyn. He was a fucking nutter. What has Starmer done that’s so bad? It’s just noise from his enemies. He won a mandate at a GENERAL ELECTION. 14 years of shit can’t be turned around quickly.

#electiontresult2026 These aren’t parliamentary elections or a vote for Prime Minister. These are local council elections - and in many areas the same parties and local structures have been running councils for 10-16 years. People aren’t only voting “for Farage”. Many are voting against how their towns have been managed for years: housing, crime, roads, waste collection, local services and the cost of living. As a Polish immigrant who has lived here with my family for 10 years, I honestly understand the frustration and desperation many people feel. Year after year, council tax goes up, bills go up, services get worse, rubbish collection problems continue, towns look more neglected, protests and tensions keep growing -and many ordinary people feel like nobody is really listening anymore. Nigel Farage won’t be sitting in those councils. Local councillors will -many of whom simply disagree with how the current councils have been run and want a chance to do things differently. That’s how democracy is supposed to work. Voters change governments and councils when they feel the current system no longer represents them -even if others don’t like the result.

@lewis_goodall What came across to me was that you just couldn't bear to concede that having a monarchy had been advantageous here. You even came over as argumentative with Maitlis & Sopal.

The King has done as well as anybody could in Washington, and many on this side of the Atlantic will have enjoyed his subtle rebukes to Trump. But we're kidding ourselves if we think the visit will make any difference to anything. Most of it will have gone above Trump's head. If he does notice, he'll be annoyed. Most likely, he basically forgets any of it even happened.

Is interesting to see how the private school lobby confuses statistics like the fall in the number of children attending private schools with the number of extra children attending state schools as a result. This doesn't take into account overseas students or the fall in school rolls generally.

McSweeney says Starmer decided to appoint Mandelson at a meeting with him, Jonathan Powell and private secretary Nin Pandit on around 15 Dec 2024. He says they all discussed the pros and cons. Yet it appears no record or minutes of the discussion exist...
Alex Burghart@alexburghart

The Cabinet Secretary has confirmed to me that she has found no actual record of the PM’s decision to appoint Mandelson EITHER this is another example of a massive cover up … …. OR the basic systems of Government have broken down

EXCL: Morgan McSweeney, the prime minister’s former chief of staff, has been summoned before the foreign affairs select committee. McSweeney is to appear next Tuesday to respond to allegations that Downing Street put huge pressure on the civil service to approve his appointment as the UK’s ambassador to Washington. It is highly unusual for No 10 chiefs of staff to appear before Commons committees – even after they have left post – and the session is likely to be an explosive one. theguardian.com/politics/2026/…
