The fishes of the Ecuadorian Amazon! 🌳 Tropical freshwater fish were my first love as a child, so it was an absolute DREAM come true to help survey the world's most biodiverse freshwater eco-system!🐟 Here is a poster I have made to donate to the local community who helped us!🥰

CAL FIRE
CAL FIRE@CAL_FIRE·
California’s snowpack is melting fast. Here’s why that matters for fire risk. An early-season heat wave is rapidly melting snow across the Sierra Nevada weeks ahead of normal. Right now, that snowmelt is helping keep vegetation moist. But less snow = earlier drying. Snowpack acts as a natural reservoir, slowly releasing water into spring and early summer. When it melts too quickly, grasses and brush dry out sooner. Experts warn that early snow loss increases the chance of earlier and longer periods of fire activity, especially if warm, dry conditions continue. What to watch for: ➤ Rapid snow loss in the Sierra ➤ Warming temperatures and wind ➤ Grasses curing earlier than normal California sees fire year-round, but these conditions can bring peak fire activity sooner. Now is the time to get ready: ➡ Clear defensible space ➡ Harden your home ➡ Make a wildfire action plan ➡ Pack a go-bag #CALFIRE #FireSafety #ReadySetGo #SierraNevada #Snowpack @CA_DWR

My latest for @TheEconomist, with reporting from Fizi, South Kivu. The scale of the humanitarian crisis is going unnoticed, given the territory's remoteness. Thousands upon thousands of people were fleeing the highlands, carrying meagre belongings. economist.com/middle-east-an…

The official NOAA stats out this week confirm that winter 2025-26 was the warmest on record across a huge portion of the western and central U.S., which has contributed to extremely low mountain snowpack & worsened the CO River crisis. Meanwhile, record March heat is in forecast.

Lots of buzz online about an upcoming major March heatwave for the American SW & California. And in this case, it does indeed appear increasingly likely than an extremely anomalous and even record-breaking heatwave may envelop much of the SW about a week from now.

It’s pretty depressing that someone at A\ is willing to leak things like this. One of the reasons i respect A\ employees so much is because everyone i know there is extremely strict about not leaking any information. Shame that someone has betrayed the rest of the employees :(
