"The deepest tenet of environmentalism is that the original sin of modern civilisation is the Industrial Revolution." This is correct. When I was on the BBC's Moral Maze, it completely threw me when Matthew Taylor, Blair's ex-policy chief, attacked the Industrial Revolution. I wasn't really expecting it because for me it is a central achievement of Britain's contribution to the advancement of humanity and civilisation. It marked the moment we broke free from subsistence, scarcity, and the brute constraints of nature. It gave us mass prosperity, longer lives, modern medicine, sanitation, and the material foundations of everything we have taken for granted. But what that exchange revealed is a deeper divide. For some, the Industrial Revolution is the root of our problems. For others, it is the reason we have the capacity to solve them at all. If you start from the premise that industrial civilisation is the problem, then policies that constrain hydrocarbons and limit growth begin to look virtuous. If you start from the opposite premise, that human flourishing depends on abundant, reliable, high-density energy, then those same policies look reckless. That is the real argument. Everything else is downstream of it. Great piece from @RupertDarwall mol.im/a/15699301

@eutics41140 @johnmilbank3 @RoryStewartUK @ITattum @JohnCleese had a recognized status under the milet system - which they never had in Christian Europe. Same was true of Christians. Re. relative bellicosity of Christians and Muslims, one has to look further than the Scriptural texts, imo.. Don't think Milbank's characterization is fair. 2/

.@JohnCleese - What would Christian “culture” look like if you represented it with 1 Sam 15:3 Josh 6:21 Deut 7:1 Deut 20:16–18 Ex 17 - Deut 25 Psalm 137:9 etc? How about actually meeting some Muslims and listening to them instead of demonising a religion you know very little about with selective quotations…
John Cleese@JohnCleese

This is complete nonsense To criticise a culture whose holy book advocates the killing of all the people they disagree with...is not racist It's culturalist And this criticism seems wholly justifiable to me Oh ! There's the door bell. Must be the police...

In which I explain the extraordinary energy density of nuclear power using the world‘s most famous equation E=MC2. Start with a 100 tonne fuel load in a 1 GW PWR. We fission 3kg of heavy metal per day. Everyday 3g of that mass is transformed into energy. According to E=MC2 thats 3g x the speed of light 300 million m/s squared. 3g x 90,000,000,000,000,000 m2/s2 equals a lot of Joules. Expressed in more familiar terms for the power sector thats 75GWh thermal or 24GWh electric. So to summarize that 3g/day powers 1 million homes every day for 18 months. To watch the full interview on the Great Simplification podcast with Nate Hagens see the link in the replies.

@GHWTowler This is all energy costs, Gawain. We must be extremely radical in rebuilding energy capacity and security. It has to be the number one industrial policy.

Just appalled that the response to the campaign’s failure to successfully navigate the full parliamentary process including scrutiny, for their PMB is to next time fully stack the committee with yes people, and they call it democratic! news.sky.com/story/how-fox-…

@AshleyDalton_MP @MustardGre53879 That is one of the oddest features of this whole episode. It seems to suggest that the Bill was intended to be the thin end of something that would edge quickly into a broader scope. Why else not accept deeper safeguards to ensure the proponents own requested limits??

@MustardGre53879 It’s not blocking, it’s scrutiny. And the proponents of the bill have blocked almost all attempts to improve it.

@ross_baglin @Object_Zero_ This is where something is not quite right with Charles Manson. He said, "Helter Skelter," but he should have said, "Pell Mell," which would have been more apposite.

@Object_Zero_ You are right he was a great Englishman but they were not honestly impossible odds. 34 ships to 27, and the British had far superior gunnery, training, and flintlock cannon, not wick fuses. His tactics caused a pell mell battle where these advantages were most telling.

Britain used to be led by men like this. • Sent to stop an assembling invasion force • Face impossible odds • Invent new battle doctrine on the spot • Lead from the front (suicide) • Win decisively! • Capture ALL enemy ships • Unexpectedly achieve total naval supremacy • Unexpectedly achieve global hegemony that lasts for 200 years. • Bleed out onboard your shattered flagship HMS Victory No other man has ever experienced such an afternoon.

@PhilJC2 Christianity is the only hope for @NatSecSoc and @Humanists_UK (in more ways than salvation and life): the 12+% Muslim population, and demographic trajectory, means Islam will be the major religion and a super-minority that will kill them.

The Bible Society’s “Quiet Revival” report may have been based on flawed data but it’s hard to deny the anecdotal evidence many of us are seeing. Standing room only for a weekday Mass today in central London.

There is a path to 35-38% for Reform UK at the next General Election, but to be honest the raw headline figure matters much less than the *efficency* in geographic terms of its electoral coalition. In First Past the Post systems there is a simple maxim to internalise: "It's the efficiency, stupid". Reform just needs to ensure it is turning out enough voters in enough constituencies to finish in first place. The overall popular vote percentage is only important "symbolically". In practice what matters is having a 6-8% gap over the second placed party with the other parties also bunched up in the low to mid teens and the Conservative Party in particular, as the nearest natural electoral competition to Reform, being squeezed down into third or fourth place. Do that and Reform can put in place conditions for a multi Parliament period of electoral hegemony.
𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐰 J🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿@Whirlybird69

@DanielCreminGB I think that's right. I see commentators complaining that Reform aren't on 40% but we are in a multi party system. That's very hard to do.

I didn't say it was enough. The Bible is an assembly of myth, law, history, poetry and biography. You have to read it intelligently.
EA Maclean@ea_maclean

@ClarkeMicah Illustration, as requested, why it takes more than one translation to work out where doctrine comes from. "Jesus loves me yes I know/ Coz the Bible tells me so" isn't enough when the Bible is a translation of old documents themselves interpretations of past events and teachings.
