What's really behind the decline of dating, marriage, and coupling in America—and around the world? The first graph (via FT/@_alice_evans) is the central mystery. Young ppl are more single today than in any period for which we have good data. 2 main theories: 1. It's the men. As @lymanstoneky told me, “men’s odds of being in a relationship today are still highly correlated with their income. Women do not typically invest in long-term relationships with men who have nothing to contribute economically.” 2. It's not just men's wages; it's women's expectations. As @_alice_evans has written, coupling is down just about everywhere—not just in Europe and America, but in Korea and Turkey. In Iran, annual marriages plummeted by 40% in 10 years. Smartphones and social media may have narrowed many young people’s lives, but they’ve also opened women’s minds to the possibility of professional and personal development; and where men fail to support their dreams, relationships fail to flourish, "the sexes drift apart." Romance is complicated, ppl's needs are diverse, and no one explanation will account for everything. But if I had to sum up this big messy story in a sentence, it would be this: Coupling is declining in the U.S. and around the world, as women’s expectations rise and lower-income men’s fortunes fall; this combination is subverting the traditional role of straight marriage, in which men are seen as necessary for the economic insurance of their family.

@JoshWashIBSI So sorry. That’s the ultimate tragedy and I hope you find strength in your loved ones moving forward.

My wife passed away this morning at 3:30am with her hand in mine. After being diagnosed with lupus a few weeks ago, my wife passed out in the Newark airport on her way home on December 26. I would have lost her then had my brother in-law not been traveling back to the states with her.  I took the next flight up from Charlotte, and was with her in the ICU. She was in transitioned to a normal room, which kept us all in high spirits. She had a minor operation due tomorrow, but unfortunately, she did not make it to the sunrise. I didn’t know she was about to transition, but I slept in the hospital rooms with her and was able to speak to, and sing to her just about 30 minutes before she passed.  She always talked about the day when she would finally hear the applause of Heaven for the life she lived. That day is today. No other words to offer at the moment except please keep the Washington and Meshoe family in your prayers.

Hurricane hits, Trump’s first instinct is to say the government is not sending help to MAGA areas. No Democrat is like this. Anyone who talks about the tone of politicians or norms or decency or whatever and doesn’t think Trump stands apart is not worth taking seriously.
