Political historian: In my book I wrote about cities raiding the pension fund as a cautionary tale. Populist politician: At long last, we have secured money for handouts via raiding the pension fund from classic political history novel Don't Raid the Pension Fund

A breakdown of the "new" $4 billion in aid, much of which we already knew about. The bulk is from authorizing NYC to delay its pension payments. Also includes the $500M from the pied-a-terre tax.

@evenscreech @d08890 @littmath It most obviously does though? Yes, the rules are extremely complex but that LLMs can do it is proof that just following rules will result in coherent text.

FWIW I see no reason that e.g. curiosity, judgment, taste etc. cannot or will not be automated. I find it believable that humans will maintain an edge in some intangibles for some time. But it seems plausible they’ll be very intangible indeed.

@d08890 @littmath you’d need a stronger statement here about the lack of statistical irregularities. otherwise you can’t account for the ability of LLMs to even generate text, which clearly doesn’t follow any rule that anyone can give.

@littmath hm yes, fair; i'll need to think about this a bit more but it seems that while easy qs of taste can be settled by consensus (is da vinci a better painter than bush?) i'm not sure how you'd provide that kind of signal for the hard ones (is beethoven's 5th or 6th symphony better?)

@AjazTrades @evenscreech @idoccor When CME went down in the fall, all the marker-makers said they'd rather wait for Aurora to be fixed than to fail over to the backup. Everyone was technically "capable" of doing so, but no one wants to, because they're hyper-optimized for the environment they're in.

No, you can have the best of both when using Multi-AZ as a warm standby for Async replication, standby AZ at minimal capacity, Route 53 failover. Zero latency cost in steady state... that would give you minutes of RTO instead of hours. AWS literally documents it as one of their four standard DR patterns. "Centralised for latency" and "warm failover ready" aren't mutually exclusive. Coinbase's 5+ hour downtime wasn't an unavoidable latency tradeoff — it was a choice.
