200 years today since the world's first passenger railway journey. So here's an article about the railways & English football: the reason for formation of Man Utd (and others), football specials, the stations built especially for stadiums (and barely used) nytimes.com/athletic/66577…

Dedication and dignity, that was Tony Book, and talent as player, coach and manager. Book, who has passed away at 90, was the ultimate selfless, hard-working club servant. He was Mr Manchester City, a club legend, Honorary President and loved and respected by all. Hailing from an Army background (his father served in Burma and he did National Service), Book understood the concept of duty – and hard work. He did an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and combined that with playing for Bath City. Malcolm Allison saw him, appreciated his ability and character, and proved vital in Book's career. He went to Toronto City with Allison (briefly), Plymouth Argyle and then Manchester City (for £17,000) in 1966 aged 32. Too old? No, just very experienced and very much a leader. “Skip” was involved with City for almost 60 years in a range of roles, all of which he performed with distinction. He was a fine right-back, a model of consistency, in that wonderful side of Lee, Bell and Summerbee. He won the First Division title, FA Cup, Uefa Cup-Winners’ Cup and League Cup. He was City’s most successful captain until Vincent Kompany. Book was so good he was voted Footballer of the Year along with Dave Mackay of Derby County in 1969. He shone as manager, too. From 1974 to 1979, Book produced a really entertaining side including Dennis Tueart, Asa Hartford and Peter Barnes, giving kids a chance, and winning the 1976 League Cup (with Tueart’s famous overhead kick). Book was so determined that the final with Newcastle United should be a great spectacle, that he even spoke to their manager Gordon Lee in advance about the importance of the two sides putting on a great show. Eventually, Book was poorly treated by the chairman Peter Swales, who eased him out (and later admitted his mistake). Book loved the club, and the club needed him, so after a brief spell away he returned as an inspiring youth coach. Along with Glyn Pardoe, Book shaped City’s 1986 FA Youth Cup winners graced by the likes of Paul Lake, David White, Steve Redmond, Ian Brightwell and Andy Hinchcliffe. What a generation of talent. Always willing to help out, Book was twice caretaker when asked to steady the ship. He was a joy and privilege to meet because he had such experience and wisdom, and because he embodied values like loyalty and humility. Tony Book will be much missed. My condolences to his family and friends. RIP.

@ManCityHelp Could you please tell me the official attendance for the West Ham game on the 19th of May. I've seen it published via the BBC, Premier League, and, here, on the Blue Moon forum, as 55,097 - yet this is higher than the Etihad's official current capacity. Thanks.

@bifana_bifana @OAntiLampiao @Miguel_LPereira It did happen yesterday, but I'm sorry to point this out, Simon, but the Etihad photo is from last season. As an aside, did the mighty Porto do enough to make you think they are capable of holding onto their position against Arsenal next week?

@OAntiLampiao @Miguel_LPereira Aware of that, but they could have sat there limply and felt sorry for themselves. The support instead was loud, vivid and visible. On the other hand, maybe Utd's fickle support should have been made to stay put and witness the display of their heroes right to the end.

@peterlakie @DalaiPalmerMCR @bifana_bifana No. Frozen as it snowed virtually all the game, and had to go for a pee at game's end in a darkened shell swimming in urine deemed to be described as a toilet. Took an age to thaw out and warm up on the way home in the car.

4 January 1986 FAC3 Walsall 1-3 CITY Cracking match on ice rink pitch. Man of the Match Neil McNab, plus 2 goals for Paul Simpson in Billy McNeill's first FA Cup triumph in three attempts at the helm of City.

@bifana_bifana @DavidoLFC Ridiculous, horrible, needlessly aggressive and ignorant, from my interactions so far this week. ^Had this in mind.

@Murd73 @bifana_bifana A bit before his time, maybe? Migueli has Venables on his shoulders, the other is Clos, I think. Always remember a BBC 'Sportsnight' piece during the La Liga winning season, where Venables screams 'Migueli !!' during a training session.

Love this photo. It is the direct link from Malcolm Allison, Venables' mentor, to Guardiola. Two of City's greatest ever coaches bookending a similarly inventive football mind in Venables and spanning 50 years of scintillating football from the sides the three of them managed.

@AmazonHelp Thanks for the reply, Pádraig. I tried that route before posting, and nothing seemed to be appropriate for me to illustrate my reason for highlighting this issue. How therefore can this be taken forward?

@AmazonHelp Deliveries to UK BL9 8QD are being left in the wrong areas. Twice in the last week I've had to contact fellow residents to let them know parcels are being left in the wrong blocks. This has also happened to me in the past - notified of delivery, parcel not received.
