A £5 bottle of alcohol-free beer should be 65p cheaper than the alcoholic equivalent as that's the 12% duty on the alcohol. Spirits are even worse as a £20 bottle has about £9 of duty so non-alcoholic gin should be £11.

Personally I think Alcohol free 'alcohol' should be cheaper than their alcoholic counterparts across the board... why am I paying £5 for no beer in my beer and £4.50 for beer in my beer

@stuartbruce The thing is alcohol is taxed at the brewing stage. Breweries must pay Alcohol Duty to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) on the alcohol, As many alcohol free beers are first brewed as standard alcoholic beer, they then undergo a secondary extraction process, which is costly to do

Right to buy was one of the most insane, deeply damaging policies in Britain’s history. Perhaps the triple lock, in time, will get a strong second place. It speaks volumes that Labour was still in favour of it until 10 minutes ago.

Just shows how hard it is to be even slightly contrarian on pension policies, especially state pension, even when your reasons are to benefit future generations

It is right to bring forward the increase in the State Pension Age to 68 in the late 2030s rather than the mid 2040s. A good move from @TorstenBell. But we need to get it to 70 - and that age be the cultural norm for retirement - asap. We also need to increase the age of accessing your private pension as quickly as possible. It’s 55 at the moment; 57 in 2028. Needs to be much higher as quickly as possible. One of the best ways to boost growth and reduce public expenditure is to get over 55s working longer. If babyboomers want their children and grandchildren to enjoy the standard of living they’ve enjoyed, they need to contribute more in the labour market now. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

Their wealth tax is very small, with lots of carve outs, and they don't have CGT. There's also no IHT for direct descendents.

Seriously, they all wanted him gone. They had one of the worst local elections in history. He's one of the least popular PM's in history, the worst in this time frame.
I'm all for a little grace in defeat but this is too much. He was an abject failure. Disliked by all sides.

This is economically retarded. Billionaires aren't "hoarding" houses, food, or medicine like some dragon on a pile of gold. Their wealth is almost entirely in ownership of companies. Shares that represent factories, software, supply chains, and jobs that produce those things at massive scale.
Elon doesn't have a vault with a billion houses in it. Bezos isn't sitting on warehouses of rotting food. Their net worth reflects the market value of businesses that employ hundreds of thousands and deliver products to billions. Liquidating that wouldn't magically give everyone a mansion; it'd crash the productive capacity that makes food, homes, and medicine affordable and abundant in the first place.

When you see the scale of the allegations against David Sullivan tomorrow, there should be outrage towards the @FA, @WestHam and all the others who pretended not to know he's accused of multiple rapes, sexual assaults and child sexual exploitation.
