Dear fellow people who can speak other languages: is it pretentious to pronounce foreign words right? Like, I don't want to say 'Van goff' or 'Van Go' for Van Gogh, because that's not how it's said but do I sound a dick if I say Fon Hockh with the throat sound?

@fcqv @BradfemlyWalsh The same way most people do, I guess. Same pronunciation if I'm speaking Norwegian or English, btw.

West Midlands emergency services have confirmed they won’t be participating in Birmingham Pride this weekend, citing legal uncertainty following a High Court ruling on uniformed attendance at Pride events. I want to be clear about where I stand.

@danwaterfield I would never go through the PhD mill, but I’ve supported a couple of people through it. It’s quite extraordinary that people could so thoroughly misunderstand the process

A large part of the viva in history was having my examiners go through everything I’d cited (a few hundred books and papers, not including primary sources) and checking whether they said the things I’d claimed they’d said.

Yeah you read the stuff you cite, and check those papers’ citations to see whether they’re supported.
Lenka Zdeborova@zdeborova

@eiszett Have you read all the sources you ever cited? During my PhD we, along with dozens of other papers, cited a paper that I later found did not contain the result for which it was commonly cited. I should be banned I guess.

@SarahVaci Sonia Sodha. Very clever, but with some views I really don’t understand, so I’d learn something either way. She’d probably also work out how to fix the lift😂

If you had to be stuck in a lift for 3 hours with someone famous who would you pick?

@fcqv @slooterman @janecoaston It’s the same question because often my father can’t cook and I’m the only person who lives with him and I often can’t cook. So if you wanna drop by and prepare our meals, we’d love it

Internet culture reporter and influencer @TaylorLorenz insists that the poor are forced, due to a lack of time or capacity to cook, to rely on DoorDash for sustenance, and that such meal delivery services “act as a tax on the poor.” She blames leftists for failing to grasp this.

@QcWynter @katbalmy adapting core concepts such as man and woman and so on. If you don't like the term social construct for description of subsets of the collection of individuals that forms society then what is it?

Enforcing untrue speech only works up to the point at which someone says, "no, I'm not going to do that". At that point a bullying state has to resort to punishment, as is now the case in Australia. That awakens the people to the evident unfairness. We will see what happens next.

@HelenWebberley Helen, I go back-and-forth with you. I think you’re so good at making the case for our healthcare, but then you just say stupid shit like this to content, farm. Do you understand how un serious this makes us seem?

Andy, if they ask you whether a woman can have a penis, the answer is yes. Trust me, I'm a doctor. 👍

@HelenWebberley You’re a doctor, but you have no licence to practise medicine anywhere in the world. And nobody trusts you, because you have allowed yourself to become unmoored from reality

@fcqv @Busanitian @RichardDawkins I haven't lost this debate. You've not accepted my premise. That's fine. We don't have to agree. I didn't expect to persuade you. If sporting bodies were agreeing on their own, it wouldn't require legislation.

The leader of the Lib Dems, and the leader and deputy leader of the Green party, think some women have penises. In itself, it seems like a relatively unimportant matter. But it is symptomatic of a contempt for science and evidence-based truth. Could you vote for a flat-Earther?
