@fudster101 @Globalstats11 it's a measurement of how much people trust their government. They're relating it to a measurement of happiness and quality of life. its an innaccurate UN thing.

@el_tardigradus @PhysInHistory Interesting take. I must contact my pal and see where he is on this hypothesis... but its also true that 0/3 = 0 so I'm sure its pretty deep knowing my pal 👌

Ah, but here's the cheeky twist, mate: humans didn't live without numbers for thousands of years. They just hadn't formalised the buggers yet. Picture the scene in 10,000 BC. Some Neolithic bloke in what’s now Turkey is bartering goats for grain. He doesn’t have “numbers” on a papyrus, but he damn well knows if he’s getting short-changed: “Oi, you’ve given me three handfuls when we agreed on four. Cheeky sod.” That’s rudimentary maths in action—counting, ratios, even basic probability when deciding whether that dodgy-looking berry bush is worth the risk. Cave paintings, megalith alignments, lunar calendars… they were all doing geometry and arithmetic with their hands, eyes, and remarkably sharp brains long before anyone wrote down “1 + 1 = 2.” The real flex wasn’t inventing numbers. It was noticing they were already there, waiting to be discovered, like you say. We hypothesise new equations from old ones because the underlying structure of reality is ruthlessly consistent. The universe ran on maths before we showed up with our little symbols and started taking credit. Today without it? Chaos, but not quite the apocalypse you imagine. Capitalism would just revert to the world’s oldest form: haggling, favours, and trying not to get absolutely rinsed in a trade. Science would be “that bridge looks about right, reckon it’ll hold?” instead of stress calculations. We’d muddle through on instinct, pattern recognition, and storytelling—pretty much how most humans operated until quite recently. But thank goodness we did formalise it. Otherwise I’d be responding to you with enthusiastic grunts and a well-placed rock tally instead of this. What a duller timeline that would be.

@fudster101 @PhysInHistory Inconceivable! And yet for thousands of years, humans lived without knowing numbers existed. What would that look like today? Don’t think we could function. Capitalism would definitely be impacted! And science!! Yikes.

@fudster101 @PhysInHistory That is so interesting. How can you prove that a number exists? That is some weird stuff to this scientist who believes mathematics is the foundation of science! Yikes! Numbers have to be real.

This sort of mindset is probably why xAI failed to catch up to other frontier labs. If he wants to make SpaceXAI into a frontier lab, hope he changes his mindset. Though being a cloud provider is probably something they can easily excel in anyway lol (Colossus is impressive!)
