What a treat to spend the afternoon with 105-year-old WW2 veteran and Mosquito pilot (undertaking 50 bombing raids over Germany) Colin Bell. He is truly among the most remarkable people I've ever met, and I can't wait to get stuck into his brilliant memoir, Bloody Dangerous.

The Saunders-Roe SR.A/1 was the World's 1st jet-powered flying boat. British prototype flew on July 16, 1947, hitting 512 mph with twin Beryl turbojets. Saunders-Roe believed that water-based planes could operate from forward staging areas much closer to targets than land-based fighters. This would cut down the time and effort needed to launch missions—especially attacks—while also helping offset the short range of early jets by basing them nearer the action. No runways or big support setup required—just any suitable stretch of water. RAF rejected it as inferior to land jets; US & others showed interest, but no orders. 3 built; 2 crashed (1 fatal). Survivor in Solent Sky Museum.
