As a former high school coach, those at bats are meaningless if they haven't fixed his mechanics. I coached in a larger city for a long time. I cut plenty of travel ball guys over rec players. The best players make the team. I am just going to say it to get it out there. Travel ball plays too many games and doesn't come close to practicing enough. The lack of fundamentals from these kids is quite honestly appalling a lot of times.

@dadjokerealtor This is what I’ve been trying to tell people, it’s not about the club team per se, it’s about the amount of game time exposure that compounds. Club kids in baseball get 200 extra ABs a year. That generally can’t be replicated outside of club ball.

This guy is a getting a lot of shit for this take, but he’s largely correct. If you want your kid to go play on his high school baseball team, he has to be a club baseball player or be in the top like 3% of athletes if not. That’s just life in 2026.
Jason Helmes@anymanfitness

Bad news, dude: If your kid doesn’t play travel/AAU they have no chance of playing varsity in high school. Only exceptions would be small, rural schools without many players to choose from. Any decent sized high school, every kid on varsity plays travel.

@SandyMac718 To be fair, when Musial played, St. Louis was one of the 10 largest cities in the country.

As a guy who coached high school in a larger city for a long time, this is completely inaccurate. I don't care who you played for in summer. The best players are making the team and playing. Where your statement may hold validity is there are barely any rec leagues left. Almost all sports here have been monetized.

@Seth_3773 100%. Asa coach, we don't want to spend 3 days for you to get a drill right because you can't make a good throw. Especially at the high school level where the season is condensed in a small amount of time.

Players stop feeling “picked on” when you are being coached to do the right things. Coaches are not going to get on you if you’re: • Hustling every rep • Shirt tucked in • Showing good body language • Playing solid catch • Taking care of the field • Cleaning the locker room • Keeping your uniform clean If coach is still reminding you about these things after the first week, I’m not the problem—that’s on you

@DaveG98976797 @Seth_3773 Right. The team could have given a multitude of reasons to sit him. Not sure this was the right thing to say even if it's the truth.

@DallasCroob @STL_Stats_Facts @geneglass24 Your first 3 names aren’t guys who are reaching back for velocity every pitch, let me know when you want to Loyola a guy into the convo that is chasing velocity and doesn’t have 4 pitches with great tunneling and movement

@YankeesOnly87 @STL_Stats_Facts That was never my point. I agreed, as you said, the power arms are everywhere. The point was the speeds now are measured different. They are not retiring harder than Ryan like the guns say. That was literally my only point.

@JipperCones @STL_Stats_Facts You are right. I am not disagreeing with that. I said there are a ton more power arms. I just said they measure speed different.

Not enough people talk about Derek Jeter • .310/.377/.440 (.817 OPS), 115 OPS+ • 5x World Series Champ with NYY • 5x Gold Glover, 5x Silver Slugger • 71.3 WAR, 14x AS, 1996 AL ROY • 3465 hits (6th in MLB history) • 1408 DP turned by SS (6th) • 4717 times on base (13th) • 1923 runs scored (11th) • 6605 assists by SS (10th) • Averaged 204 hits per 162 • 870 XBH, 1311 RBI, 358 SB • 5.0+ WAR 6x, 3.0+ WAR 14x • Scored at least 100 runs 13x! • Played at least 150 games 13x • RHB-record 8x with 200+ hits • Never played anywhere but SS • Top Similarity Score: Craig Biggio • Captain of the New York Yankees • Named WS MVP in 2000 vs. NYM • Insanely prolific postseason hitter: • 22-11 in postseason series (158 GP) • 200 H, 111 RS, 57 XBH, 61 RBI, 18 SB • .308/.374/.465 postseason slash line • 302 postseason total bases, just nuts • Received 396 / 397 HOF votes in 2020 • Wore one number (#2) his entire career • (Last-ever single-digit Yankees number) • Invented the iconic jump throw vs Fryman • 2nd-most SS games, but 99th in SS errors • Executed "The Flip" in G3 of the 2001 ALDS • Perpetrated "The Dive" vs. BOS in July 2004 • Among players with at least -253 Rfield and 90% of their career appearances at shortstop, Derek Jeter is the all-time leader in Batting Runs by a tremendous margin, the only player to break 300 and 1 of 5 to even reach 200

He wouldn't be the best player in any organization. I would have to think about it, but he is probably not even the best SS on close to half of them.

@notgaetti @baseball_ref @CodifyBaseball @theaceofspaeder @TheWARmonger_ @JessicaDBrand @BigLeagueDigest @EmSheDoesIt @JLas43_ @OfficialMLBRFC @sondraa Derek Jeter would EASILY be the greatest player ever for 29/30 franchises. No question about it. He’s the greatest shortstop to ever play the game, but at best he’s the 3rd greatest Yankee ever (and probably its fairer to say he’s 5th or 6th among Yankees legends)

No, that's just wrong. For one, you are taught to see where the runner is at to adjust your pivot of the bag. He not only didn't do that, he made a a big kick to the outside, I am guessing assuming the runner was on an inside path. It's just not a smart baseball play. If the runner didn't pop up at the end, nothing should have been called. Hopefully he learns from that.

Everyone ripping Poni is ridiculous on THIS play, the baserunner is required to stay in the line of the base pads, KG would assume on a bang bang double play ball the runner will be sliding into the base not 3 feet or more wide of it. To suggest this should have been anything but runner interference and an automatic double play is simply absurd and not knowing the game. Cmon guys, Poni has lots of odd takes, this isn’t one of them.

Mitch Keller should drill Chandler Simpson for his takeout slide of Konnor Griffin. You gotta stick up for your teenage face of the franchise shortstop.

@zack_cozart I agree. 1st thing you look at in that situation is where the runner is at to adjust your pivot. He went right into him, which was an accomplishment being the runner was will off the bag and out of the way.

@Baqzack20 @BigBobsCards All you have to do is go to YouTube. Carlton could throw his slider at the chest 3 inches outside and it ended 3 inches inside and in the dirt. It's the nastiest slider I have ever seen. Made righties and leftys look terrible.

I’m here for the “you didn’t watch Maddux, Pedro, Smoltz, Randy, Carlton” etc. I did. Obviously they had nasty stuff. None of them were getting 19” of horizontal break on 85 mph pitches. Be so for real. We don’t have the data but Dave Stieb’s slider was probably closest.
