Most world maps use the Mercator projection, first introduced by Gerardus Mercator in 1569 for marine navigation. It keeps direction and angles accurate, allowing straight-line routes to match compass bearings. To achieve this, it stretches space away from the equator, distorting size and distance. That is why two lines that look similar here represent very different real-world distances. High-latitude regions are expanded, while areas near the equator remain closer to true scale. The only way to remove this distortion entirely is to use a globe, which preserves true distances, areas, and shapes. Flat maps always involve trade-offs. Other projections reduce specific distortions, but none can represent all properties accurately at once.

TIL you can open WiFi settings on the iPhone and tap “Open Portal Page” when connecting to public WiFi rather than waiting 5 minutes for it to decide to pop up.

@spatiallyme @tipatat That looks interesting! Does such co-located conversation “feel magical” like co-presence although you cant’t look each other in the eyes? Would you imagine it to helpful to have the other person’s real face being overlaid with their persona?

This is SO cool 😱 Sharing Apple Vision Pro experiences together in the same room is still the most magical thing in tech for me right now. We now have two Vision Pros in our household, so we tried exploring 3D models together using SharePlay. It was incredibly smooth, with the positioning always perfectly in sync. It was the perfect way to successfully convince my wife to get the orange iPhone 17 Pro. Once everyone gets to experience this, I think they’ll start to reconsider whether wearing a headset is really niche.

@adam_chal @zoodotdev Bold endeavor! I read through all of it and it clicks for me, would like to try. With my Swift background, I was looking for the type system, and thinking ResultBuilder similarities. Do you do CAD constraints? Ps. Noticed one broken image.

I wrote 120+ pages of illustrated KCL documentation, showing how to design CAD models with code using @zoodotdev. Expect regular updates as we keep shipping new features and finding better ways to teach CAD.

Big Apple display news, they have adopted quantum dots for the first time. The latest MacBook Pro's (M4) use a quantum dot (QD) film rather than a red KSF phosphor film. In the past, Apple went with the KSF solution due to better efficiency and lack of cadmium (Cd), but the latest Cd-free QD films are very efficient, feature as good or better color gamut and better motion performance.

Does anyone know of a small, single board computer that can do USB device/gadget mode on one port and a separate USB host mode on another port? The #RaspberryPi Zero cannot. I need something that small/cheap but can do both modes simultaneously. #sbc #maker #programming

How should I call Photo AI's img2img feature? Before I had "copy photo"? But bit too confusing. Now it's "copy photo". But you're not really copying, more like imitating? So "imitate photo"? Or "clone photo"?

@SwiftLang @kubamracek Awesome work! Got some samples running on STM32 and ESP32C6, Rpi Pico is next. Would love to revisit some Circuitpython experiments and see how that fares in Embedded Swift.

How small does Swift go? Tiny enough to run on a breadboard? From #WWDC24, this session by @kubamracek shows how you can build a simple HomeKit accessory that runs on a RISC-V device. And for extra credit, the demo shows off Neovim support for Swift! ✨youtube.com/watch?v=LqxbsA…

@s1ddok Big steps! Looking forward to what you come up with! FWIW Years ago we did some experiments with Continuous LOD for massive LIDAR point clouds and came up with some metrics that worked for our data, maybe this can trigger some ideas repository.tudelft.nl/islandora/obje…

I’m especially keen on exploring LODs. It's currently a significant limitation of Gaussian splats. Utilizing the data I possess to experiment with distance-to-camera renderings should be straightforward and easy-to-implement. I hope to share first results soon.

I imagine that inventing a TV felt somewhat similar. 🤯 Gaussian splatting video in VR, now running at 2x2224x2160 @ 100 FPS. iPhone's Spatial Videos simply can't compare, temporal flickering is there to remind your brain you're in VR! 🧵on performance, details, and next steps:
