@ThanksRolf @Unixsystem13 @allie__voss You don’t have to cut back on food per se, but eating out was never the norm in American history. And as a McDonald’s franchise owner, raising salaries is one of the main reasons we had to increase prices across the board. We now start hires at $14.60.

@ghunkinking @Unixsystem13 @allie__voss If you have to cut back on food instead of a second car or that 3 week holiday trip, that get pretty close to poverty. Level up the income!

@Unixsystem13 @allie__voss Exactly! That's why their income needs to go up to get richer. Them living in poverty won't allow them to buy anything.

@deeplore5 @DReynolds5294 I disagree that the economy is doing poorly in general. It isn’t doing as well as it could, especially if the idiotic Iran war hadn’t happened, but all in all it’s still pretty robust, and I say that as someone who actually employs people in revenue-generating businesses.

@ghunkinking @DReynolds5294 his arguments are irrelevantly small trying to pick apart some straw man who spends too much on door dash. the general state of the economy and the country is poor. his arguments are also born out of ignorance and arrogance stating the youth just need to spend less. out of touch.

@deeplore5 @DReynolds5294 I'm in denial of what exactly? If he had used housing, yes, he would have had a great case, but he used something that was never normal, so his whole argument failed.

@deeplore5 @DReynolds5294 No, but he clearly stated a middle-class income was eating out 5 times a week on that unless you had an expense account because, say, you were a traveling salesman, ever the norm?

@constans I mean, I usually had a little more variety but was still well under 5 dollars a day even at today's grocery prices.

A third grader? This is what I ate for lunch as a lab researcher after I finished grad school making plenty of money. (Turkey slices cost way more, tho) You are not a sales executive on an expense account. You do not get to have a “power lunch” at a sit down restaurant every day

Congrats you just saved $749 per year on lunch by eating like a 3rd grader. Now, you can afford a home with a 50 year mortgage in 18years instead of never.

@ghunkinking @CarolinaLion2 Or we could deport millions of street-shitters and watch housing prices plummet and salaries jump, but you'd be against that option too, right? Because of the disabled. Or kittens. Or something equally noble and not at all self-interested.

I wonder how people who go on about the younger generations need to spend less on their meals like this would react to the suggestion we kill Social Security so young people can save more in their paychecks?
Bet Sobon@SobonBet

@CarolinaLion2 Hey moron, that is ONE ITEM. Imagine if you saved money on EVERYTHING. $10K is nothing to scoff at. And this is why you will never have anything, your attitude is horrible.

@deeplore5 @DReynolds5294 Diminished from when? Because unless you were on an expense account, spending that on lunch was never anywhere near the norm. For my parent generation eating in a sit-down restaurant was a handful of occasions a year event, if that, and McDonald's was maybe a dozen times.

@DReynolds5294 doordash or things like that will have you at about that price point in a lot of places. no body is really arguing the point tho which is that American prosperity is quite diminished.

@deeplore5 @constans Okay, what's the point here then? Because to me, doing that more than maybe once a week on that salary seems financially unsound, so why shouldn't he say so?

Buttigieg says data centers should have to prove that they'll benefit a local community before coming in. This is the kind of thing that sounds good but would basically destroy the economy and American living standards. Markets should allocate capital, not activists.

Sweden is choosing capitalism. Social spending as percentage of GDP is now 24%, lower than most of Northern Europe. Sweden has surpassed the US in billionaires per capita. School choice is universal, one in ten teens goes to a school operated by a company listed on the Stockholm stock exchange. Taxes have been cut three years in a row. Sweden has seen "more than 500 initial public offerings over the 10 years through 2024, more than Germany, France, the Netherlands and Spain combined" Nearly half of primary healthcare clinics are now privately owned. The result? Same as always. Sweden is projected to grow 2% a year through 2030, which is the same as the US and double France and Germany. How many times does this have to keep happening across the world? How many times does free market capitalism have to prove itself superior to socialism before the world accepts the truth?

Nobody in America voted for data centers. Nobody in America voted for AI. Nobody in America voted for surveillance capitalism. The entire fabric of our society is being changed without the will of the people. Without a vote.

The “23 atomic bombs” talking point is complete BS. By the same math, the sunlight that hits the 40k acre property this data center will be built on already produces over 50 atomic bombs worth of heat energy daily. This is a misinformation campaign we are watching in real time.
Pubity@pubity

Kevin O'Leary's proposed data center in Utah will require 9 Gigawatts of energy to function when fully built, double Utah's current energy usage for the entire state. It will dump around 23 atomic bombs worth of thermal load on the environment every day.
