How high do bond yields need to go before Australia admits the current model is severely broken? The AU10Y is back above 5.1% and the AU30Y is above 5.5%. Yet the labor Government spending continues to ratchet upwards, debt is growing and our energy costs are still going up. Plus Canberra keeps pretending Net Zero accounting games are a substitute for engineering, productivity and real fiscal discipline. Even the old worst-case climate scenarios are being walked back as poor “business as usual” assumptions, yet Australia is still pricing its struggling economy around them. We need reliable power, honest budgets and policy built on engineering reality and not global wealth-transfer schemes dressed up as virtue. Side note: If Australia had to refinance roughly $1.1 trillion of government debt at 5.5%, that’s about: - $60.5 billion per year in interest - $166 million per day - $6.9 million per hour - $115,000 per minute And that’s before hospitals, roads, defence, welfare or infrastructure. Is this really the future we want to hand to the next generation of Australians? Of course not.

An 20-year-old Canadian girl won $1M (tax free in Canada) in the lottery and chose $1,000/week instead of the lump sum. Is this wise or the worst financial decision of her life? What are you doing when this happens to you??

I suspect, like most Catholic conservatives, I have never really had a major ideological awakening (and hope never to, really) so I found this @clairlemon piece to be both bracing and necessary reading about when reality mugs you … bravo Claire
