I think post 24, Dems have overthought and demoralized themselves about what it takes to win back power. Voters just want normal leaders who are not going to screw up the economy. It's VERY simple.
Lakshya Jain@lxeagle17

For all of the problems Democrats have, it's the Republicans who have a president at 39% approval. The discussion in my article is around how many votes Dems leave on the table, not whether they can win again. (The likeliest 2028 R nominee—Vance—also has really ugly numbers)

A lesson of the past 6 years is if you’re pledging to only serve one term (or voters get that impression from you) maybe you shouldn’t run.

I was very skeptical of Dems packing the courts when they regained power. But I'm coming around to it. Not only are Conservatives power-hungry, remorseless fiends, but they're also FOS! You could literally argue the below about ANY minority SCOTUS judge.
Clay Travis@ClayTravis

There is a legitimate argument that Ketanji Brown Jackson’s appointment to the Supreme Court — which President Joe Biden specifically said was directly intended to put a black woman on the Supreme Court — was unconstitutional under federal law.

I didn’t like USAID. But watching people gleefully mock a woman for having to start over at ~60 is bleak. You can disagree with someone’s politics without losing basic empathy. The internet has broken a lot of brains.

"Sheryl Cowan, 57, was making $272,000 a year as a senior VP at a U.S.A.I.D.-funded nonprofit when she was let go at the end of March 2025. Last month she had an online interview for a $19-an-hour job managing a Penzeys Spices store in Falls Church, Va." nytimes.com/2026/04/21/us/…

I'm going to break my self-imposed social media ban to note something that I might write if I wasn't leaving on a trip tonight: If you want to solve gerrymandering, it is a solvable problem.

This kind aligns with what @SeanTrende wrote yesterday. A red-wave election year, the new VA map might not be helpful to Dems. Anyways, gerrymandering is dumb. Congress should pass a nationwide ban and force states to draw maps based on general election voting behavior, by state.
Matt Whitlock@MattWhitlock

This is pretty amazing Democrats leaned so heavily on Fairfax to drive the entire referendum, but Republicans actually drove enough turnout to win 3 of the new districts, got “The Lobster” within 0.3, and 2 others blue districts within 5.

@guypbenson Then push for a gerrymandering nationwide ban. Dems are playing the game that Repubs were very comfortable playing a few months ago. Join forces with Dems to ban this stupid practice. Or is this whining all show?

Respectfully, I don’t agree that Texas “started” redistricting Calvinball, given the substance of the tweet I’m responding to below. I also viewed Texas’ action skeptically, and even warned that it could prove to be at least be a partial dummymander, but thought it was at least defensible as a temporary corrective to the 2020 Census screw-ups that robbed red states of 6-10 seats (I don’t understand how that admitted government failure is allowed to just stand for a decade of unfair maps across more than a dozen states). Once TX did its thing, CA answered, tit for tat. VA is now an egregious escalation for multiple reasons. All the “but Texas” hyperventilating ignores CA already acting to “level the playing field” (and the fact that CA was already more gerrymandered than TX is now, even before the new CA maps). Texas’ new, debatable map is still far more fair and representative than Virginia’s new one (and several other blue state gerrymander gems). All of this informs my view.
John Podhoretz@jpodhoretz

I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous. Previous fights involved census apportionment, in NC and NY--maps were aggressive and courts got involved. Texas introduced Calvinball.

@guypbenson This is incorrect and you know it. It could also be easily solved if Cons join Dems and launch a bipartisan bill to ban gerrymandering. But you guys are hacks. You don’t want to solve the issue.

Indeed, the “Texas started it” premise is incorrect (plus CA already answered). NY Dems went before TX (see below), to say nothing of the wild existing Dem gerrymanders in places like IL & MD. And to say nothing of admitted 2020 Census miscounts robbing red states of 6-10 seats.
Claudia Tenney@claudiatenney

.@AriFleischer please stop saying Texas started this redistricting mess. New York started it. After an extreme gerrymander by NY Dems in 2022, completely ignoring the Independent Commission they created in 2014, the Court of Appeals in NY restored fairness. Then, the Dems sued again in 2024 to overturn the Court of Appeals decision. They bullied 2 Court of Appeals judges off the bench and forced new Dem. favorable maps and the Reps lost 4 seats. In 2026 they AGAiN sued to gerrymander and eliminate the Rep seat in Staten Island and were looking for even more power. The US Supreme Court stopped the nonsense for now. The Dems plan to gerrymander again in 2028. They will stop at nothing and do not care about the people or fairness. This is a bloodsport. The Republicans need to wake up and recognize this fact. Sign the Save America Act into law for starters. And do whatever it takes within the law to ensure that the citizens of this country win.

@guypbenson @sahilkapur Or you know, join Dems and pass legislation banning gerrymandering?! But why would you think that? You hate America!

One thing Rs will need to decide is whether to try to answer Dem escalations now, in a suboptimal political climate, or wait until the 2030 census pummels blue states with the consequences of poor governance and then pile on with merciless redistricting…
Adam Carlson@admcrlsn

To my eye, Dems have definitively taken the lead in the mid-decade redistricting battle for this cycle. 🔵 Ds will likely gain 8-10 seats 🔴 Rs will likely gain 4-8 seats And it seems like an awfully big risk for FL to further redraw its map given the swings we’re seeing in special elections.

Significant chance that the next time the Democrats are in charge with even 51 Senate seats they implement a breathtaking power grab of the kind that would have made FDR blanch.
