@globaltravails @MerrynSW Is this a wind up? It's far from the best, not well organised at all. The staff are probably some of the worst in Europe.

If I were running Edinburgh Airport security I too would hide my satisfaction monitoring machine behind a screen.

I mean, what did they expect? The app was only available for download from today. People couldn’t do so in advance.

David Ross, ScotRail Chief Operating Officer, said: “We launched the new ScotRail app and website booking system today – with thousands of people downloading it first thing this morning and successfully buying tickets to travel with us. “Unfortunately, we are experiencing some intermittent technical difficulties with the app – with customers having problems while attempting to purchase tickets. “We are sorry for the issues customers are experiencing, and I want to reassure them that we are working flat out with our supplier to fix the issue. “In the meantime, customers who are facing difficulties with the new app can continue to use the previous app to buy tickets, or alternatively use ticket offices or ticket vending machines before they travel. “I know this has been a frustrating day for some customers and I want to thank them for their patience while our teams work hard to get things up and running.”

@globaltravails @yuanyi_z Culturally it probably is. I have more problem with the idea that it’s Britain’s second city economically. It’s just too small and it doesn’t have a large urban agglomeration.

Edinburgh is obviously Britain's second city. No serious person can doubt this.

@PastGlasgow The Morris Marina dates it from 1971 at the earliest. Also, think that’s a Victor FE estate behind the Renault 6, which would mean ‘72 at the earliest.

@KatrinaFaccenda Security is the slickest of any airport I’ve been to but the noticeable thing when you are through security is the lack of seating. Every space given over to selling something. Arrivals in the worst of any airport in Europe. Filthy, cramped, queues and a long wait for luggage.

I was in arrivals/check at Edinburgh Airport from 9am and saw nothing to show that this airport centres travellers. Privatisation has seen a creep towards working beyond capacity leaving no resilience, no space and endless walks to gates for max exposure to shops and bars.

@SeanDubIreland Most Americans go to Ireland to see ancestral villages etc. I agree Scotland is a decent alternative but most yanks will want to see the more Celtic parts.

@EdinburghAirport and Swissport once again operating an utter shambles of an organisation. An airport too small for the number of passengers it serves. Looking forward to spending my morning in baggage reclaim. Should have brought a picnic and downloaded some feature films.

Why is there this push in the modern era to rate things and provide opinions? I booked a boiler service and, for the most part, interacted through a chat bot. We arranged a date and a time, I got a confirmation. That’s it. I do not need to rate the experience. Exhausting!

@Unvaxxed2020 @Jackbmeyer Cultivated means unnatural, really. And yes, there are areas of Scotland that share similar landscapes to England. I gave you some examples. I also missed out the NE of Scotland as a cultivated landscape. Scotland is just a great deal more varied.

@globaltravails @Jackbmeyer There isn't any land in Scotland that matches England, as we have cultivated it far more. Lakes>Trossachs. Which is better, the Himalayas or the European Alps? The Alps, obviously, as humans have cultivated it and made them better, otherwise its just boring geology.

@Unvaxxed2020 @Jackbmeyer Like the landscape in Scotland is one similar quantity. If we want a superior Lake District, we do the Trossachs. If we want cultivated rolling hills, greenery and villages we do Perthshire, the Borders or Fife. It is quite varied.

@Jackbmeyer Scots think its an own to brag about their completely desolate, uncultivated and barren landscapes being free to wander around on. Why wouldn't they be, no is using them. Google image 'Scottish landscapes' and English landscapes' - one is barren geology, the other cultivated.

@AaronBastani It’s not remotely the same as Ireland, but look at the population of Scotland today and see how the Union with England has negatively impacted that. In 1700 the population of England was 5 times the size of Scotland. Now, after 300 years of the Union, it is now 10 times the size.

Ireland should have a population of 30 million today. The island has fewer people now than 200 years ago! The only remotely similar national demographic event in modern European history is Poland before & after WW2.
Yet we barely think about it in Britain.

@MerrynSW Looking forward to the podcast Merryn. Some interesting philosophical questions. For many of those who hype LLMs and AI this is a religion for them. Questioning AI’s advances doesn’t seem to fit their “compute”. But I think we really need to.

My piece on LLMs today less of a minority opinion than you might think. Here's Joachim Klements on the same. "If these three results (the prevalence of hallucinations, the inability to remove the neurons that create them and free replication of basic models without the need to pay for more complex models) are true, then OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and others are in serious trouble. Large-scale LLMs will not be able to replace mission-critical software because of the inherent hallucination problem, which does not go away due to the very structure of the models. At the same time, for everyday use cases where they are good enough, there are free models that already can do what the large models do, and every business can simply use these without having to pay OpenAI or any other money. So, where is the business model for these genAI companies?"

@SimonCalder @easyJet 2 hours before their check in officially opens. Due to the size of the queue we joined it and checked in before this. Check in and security are not so bad. Passport control at the gate was not so fine, however.

@SimonCalder Hi Simon quickie question please , i went 2 gran canaria this feb & used the entry exit machines but i didnt use them when i came home , is this a problem ? , i did get my passport stamped for each flight , thanks 👍

EU entry exit system: I have just checked, and the word from Brussels is that the digital border scheme will be fully up and running one month from today, as planned.
I am not 100% convinced.

Three years ago, blockchain was supposed to wipe out banks, stock exchanges, depositories .... everything.
Today, a new technology is supposedly set to eliminate IT services, financial analysts, consultants….(add whatever profession you like).
Go back in time and you’ll find the same pattern repeated across decades and centuries.
Every era believes disruption is the end.
