As children, Ice Cream Truck music drew us out to buy a treat. Now there is a masked bicycle guy with a large backpack & loud music who rides around @BPLBoston Copley; folks flag him down to buy drugs. Good marketing works in many contexts. Seems obvious @bostonpolice?

@MDsarecomplicit Again, free speech is a wonderful thing. I admire your commitment to our profession. But residents voting to strike is a disaster.

@gmdoherty a strike is our greatest power and blame should be laid at the feet of hospital leadership

As my wife often ways, “Free speech is a wonderful thing, because then you find out what people really think.” Unions are fine. I was in one as a resident, & was PD for unionized residents at 2 teaching hospitals But a strike would hurt everyone: patients, residents & hospitals

@DrPHO_ID A strike would be a disaster for everyone - patients, hospital and residents. Hospitals CAN run more efficiently without residents, if designed/staffed to do so. Part of the rationale for IME $ is the decreased efficiency of teaching hospitals. But a strike is not a redesign.

@gmdoherty Thanks for responding Dr. Doherty, just wanted to confirm you disagree with the remark that if residents/fellows went on strike, the hospital service/OR would run more efficiently?

In the meantime, we shouldn’t respond to any of this with acrimony or by denigrating anyone’s valid complaints. None of us created this system, but we do have the opportunity to improve it.

@maryhawn is probably right (as usual) - our system for preparing physicians for practice by bartering (patient care service) for (training +salary) may be due for an overhaul.
