As Miami prepares to host the FIFA World Cup, global attention is lifting demand for office, retail, industrial and mixed-use space. ⚽️ Here's my article in Florida Realtor magazine about what the games mean for the state's CRE market: floridarealtors.org/magazine/magaz…

@greg_isaacson @BuckSexton @teal_andrew You’ve missed the point. The door dashed lunch twice a week at $30 a pop vs packing lunch is ONE decision. Imagine a second or third decision of a similar nature. Now suddenly we’re talking about a pretty decent chunk of change now, aren’t we? I know I’d rather have $18k than not

@BuckSexton @teal_andrew Buck, $150/mo is $1800/yr saved by not door dashing in the scenario you described. Don’t know about you, but to me that’s about 2 months rent saved by not being a window licking dumbass about a single financial decision.

I suppose I'll be accused of being a leftist for saying this, but working professionals shouldn’t have to brown‑bag it to succeed in a modern society. I don't mean that in the “everyone deserves a pony” sense. I mean it in the “my car doesn’t sound right” sense.

this hasn't been true since 2008, AI is just the first time that executives doing commencement speeches have stopped saying "work hard and you'll get rewarded" and changed to "this software that I don't really understand will take your job, but don't worry, I'm rich!"
Alex Imas@alexolegimas

I keep coming back to @BenSasse’s comment that I think perfectly captures some of the anxiety around AI (paraphrasing): for a very long time now, you could go to school and decide on a job that you can expect to do for your entire adult life. That era is now over.

@mark_k @CrocodileReads A poll asking users to choose between three different agentic AI coding tools cannot possibly demonstrate the popularity or unpopularity of AI.

AI hate is not organic. It is organized, amplified, and politically motivated. ChatGPT alone has around 1B users. That tells you everything. People are not being forced to use AI. They use it because it works. The outrage is manufactured. The adoption is real.

Roughly 10% of the US workforce is self-employed. It has never been clear, exactly, how AI is supposed to benefit the other 90%. "Just be a solo entrepreneur" is not really an adequate answer to a mixed group of college graduates who are staring down the barrel of permanent unemployment.

The kids are not alright. When @ericschmidt talks about AI, people should listen. He is a deep thinker, true innovator, and a truth teller about what's happening in tech -- and more tuned into AI's impact on society and cultural fabric than most of the ruling class. We can't let AI become yet another topic where people dig into their identity-informed polarized corners, and shout and jeer at those on the other side.
Power to the People ☭🕊@ProudSocialist

The kids are alright!! Former CEO of Google Eric Schmidt gets booed every time he mentions artificial intelligence during his commencement speech at the University of Arizona. This generation just may save humanity after all.

Miami is booming, with waves of wealthy people drawn to the metro area in recent years. Yet there is a countercurrent: Its population is shrinking. The result is a glittering urban center that is richer, smaller and built to cater to upscale living. 🔗 on.wsj.com/49bLhvj

A Chinese woman attempted to extort PE billionaire Wes Edens out of $1.2B after getting STDs from a hookup that began over LinkedIn DMs Changli 'Sophia' Luo, founder of non-profit One World Initiative Advocacy, chatted up Wed Edens over DMs before eventually sleeping with him on their third meeting in 2023 Their flirty rapport turned hostile as Sophia began threatening to leak videos of them having sex. She reached out to Eden's family members, including his ex-wife and current girlfriend, and threatened to approach Fortress' investors and 'taint' Edens in an attempt to extort money from him via mediation Edens, the founder of $50B AUM Fortress Investment Group, initially settled via mediation for $6.5M before Sophia tested for HPV-16. Sophia then threatened to 'destroy' Edens if he didn't take 'responsibility' and re-settle for $1.25B Sophia was arrested while attempting to flee to China. She is currently on house-arrest ahead of trial

@scottdomes Most people probably would otherwise be watching TV, gossiping on the phone, reading magazines etc., rather than anything super intellectually demanding if they weren't scrolling.

it’s a bit ridiculous to say “the time you spend scrolling could be spent building a business/writing a novel/reading the classics”. sometimes that’s true but usually scrolling happens as a result of cognitive fatigue, and the idea that you can just “swap in” another intellectually demanding task means you’re treating your body/mind as a machine a better approach would be “the time you spend scrolling could be spent taking a stroll/napping/staring out the window/having a meandering conversation with a friend”. that’s both more palatable and probably what we’re actually craving when we reach for our phone: a brief break from the demands of life, and a time to let our mind relax

Regarding my viral tweet: We need to draw lines somewhere. I’m drawing a hard line at dining in restaurants that allow their servers to record their customers, and potentially their credit cards, without consent. Whether or not they post it online. I don’t wish to dine with a camera shoved in my face. Security cameras do not enter my personal space like servers do. BTW: It was not a national chain, but a locally owned restaurant.

One big wake up moment I had was driving through rural Alabama, taking the back roads between Huntsville and Birmingham. There were huge 5000+ sqft houses with $60k trucks parked in front the entire way. You don't see that going through rural Germany.
Ross Douthat@DouthatNYT

America has its "fallen" regions, esp. in the Rust Belt, and its emptying rural areas, esp. in the high plains. But generally the experience of driving the country is the constant discovery of money and development in places that look like the middle of nowhere on the map.

Dawg. Flo-rida is full of sketchy office parks It's a running joke. 80's office buildings with that gold reflective glass. This area is spook city, so you've got small defense contractors, rando global "businesses," etc. It's great. Adds to the flavor.
jollyraptor@jollier_raptor

It's kind of weird how every city now in America is ringed by these gigantic logistical hub warehouses and no one has uttered a peep about them. The avg person couldn't distinguish them from a data center. Curious.

Self-publishing a book to earn $20 and not get the reader’s email address, then give most of the money to Amazon, while relying on your tiny audience to purchase the book, is one of the dumbest and most delusional decisions you can ever make. Stop letting your ego make you think this is a good idea.
