@_MattTrussell_ @justbyte_ I use both Claude Code and Codex. But it usually happens with Claude Code when I'm in the middle of something and it just stops. At that time I just switch to codex

@guigotgit @TheAhmadOsman For coding: Epoch AI data shows open-weight trails frontier by ~3 months now, down from 12+ months two years ago. Kimi K2.6 at 80.2% SWE-Bench Verified is the clearest current evidence. The gap is real but closing fast enough to change how you architect pipelines today.

@atmoio Yeah I agree. I've seen a lot lately people posting that code is cheap now. Maybe the bootstrapping code as you mentioned is cheap, but high quality code will still remain a valuable asset

the future of software engineering seems uncontroversially prompting + code review. startups will skip the code review because they’re racing against time. larger/serious orgs will take code review very seriously.
llms can do code review, but my guess is that because they have to search through large space, it will be as expensive to have say mythos review your code as it would be to have a senior dev.
based on budget:
$: prompting only
$$: low grade llm review
$$$: mid grade llm + dev review
$$$$: high grade llm + sr dev review
btw, software (past the bootstrapping phase) will get more expensive to make and take more time. quality will remain exactly the same as when humans were doing it: shit.

Mandatory human-in-the-loop is a cybersecurity cop-out. People are giving agents more and more autonomy. We need solutions that accept that world because there is no stopping it. It's like telling people in the 90s to not use the internet to avoid getting hacked. Good luck.

Tech layoffs are skyrocketing: Tech companies announced 81,747 layoffs in Q1 2026, the highest quarterly total since at least Q1 2024. Layoffs have more than DOUBLED from the previous quarter and have risen +580% since Q4 2025. March alone saw 45,800 announced job cuts, the worst single month for tech layoffs in at least 2 years. Tech layoffs are set to remain elevated with Meta's, $META, recent plans to cut ~8,000 employees. Furthermore, Microsoft, $MSFT, is offering voluntary retirement to ~7% of its US workforce, which could transition into layoffs if participation is low. This comes as tech giants shift spending toward AI chips and data centers, trimming staff to free up capital for infrastructure. US tech employment is rapidly contracting.

@marcba From my personal experience at work, the acceleration in software development was way higher in senior engineers than junior devs. Cannot pinpoint the logic behind it, just the trend I seem to notice

AI only writes senior-level code if guided by someone with the necessary expertise.
Otherwise it’s waaaaaay too easy to get shit results 🤷♂️

@kentcdodds One of the big advantages terminal users had was the ability to script and automate their tasks very easily. Not sure if that advantage persists in a heavy agent are thought
