FIRST OFFENSE, NO SECOND CHANCES! ✂️ If you have sex with a child 13 yrs old or younger in Louisiana, you WILL be castrated on your first offense. Some are calling this law "barbaric" and say offenders can be reformed. Is castration a just punishment on the first offense?

Is there anything worse than a crying baby on a plane? I wish parents would control their children. It’s so disruptive. I refuse to believe a baby cries for 10 hours. At some point this is just bad parenting, right?

@DrNeilStone @ClareCraigPath I blocked her quickly. The 19 year old daughter of a colleague died of meningitis. A horrible way to die. She was away at university and there was an outbreak.

I want to be taken seriously as a literary scholar. Alas, in conversation I use “boughten” as a past participle of “buy.”

Does anyone else have a couch blanket? Like a blanket that stays on your couch that you use when relaxing or is it just me?

@Feisty_Waters My wife Olga was PA to the chief librarian in the 60s. There was a petting zoo in the Children’s Library downtown. One day a pregnant garter snake escaped. Soon there were little snakes in the shelves all over. Panic. The staff had to hunt them down. That was a migraine day.

It was wonderful to see Metropolitan on the big screen again--haven't seen it that way since it first came out--and to show one of my very favorite films to my daughter for first time. And @WhitStillman discussed the film after! Very exciting. (Daughter loved it)

Derek Walcott died on this date in 2017. I’ve had 2 false starts with Omeros, I took it on vacation twice, and vacationed both times instead. Diving in now. It’s so very good.

@BretVDB Yes, I've read this quote before. An upper class (English) reaction to what she perceived as a too-clever-by-half Irish counter jumper. It's all there, classism, racism. From a woman who employed servants all her life to enable her to have time to write.

Virginia Woolf’s diary entries on James Joyce’s Ulysses: “An illiterate, underbred book it seems to me; the book of a self taught working man, and we all know how distressing they are, how egotistic, insistent, raw, striking, and ultimately nauseating. … I finished ‘Ulysses’ and think it is a misfire. Genius it has, I think; but of the inferior water. The book is diffuse. It is brackish. It is pretentious. It is underbred, not only in the obvious sense, but in the literary sense. A first-rate writer, I mean, respects writing too much to be tricky; startling; doing stunts.”

This makes me think of the poems of Denis Johnson and Dean Young, as well as the “black dog” that a poem sometimes faces in that dialogue of resistance.

@aliner The poet Les Murray had lifelong depression. He told me, “It makes me cry. I make it sing.”
