@BootneckStuff You're a bit off the mark with that post. It's just a defect on the RO plant as I understand it. She's alongside to receive parts and make a repair, if she had to fight she would sail with her water tanks refilled from shore supply. Not a big deal.

So HMS Dragon, the only ship sent to help in the Middle East, has now had to go for maintenance. They said she's on high alert. From the maintenence site. Gen. I don't want to see us involved in this mess at all, but they're still trying to sound off like we're major players in the maritime game here. I've seen bigger threats from a local pond holding a model boat competition for 7 year olds. We're a shambles. Start trying to fix it. What do you think about this?

@EdOfWraxall @thinkdefence Can't fit that stuff in such a small ship. VLS on its own isn't enough, you also need the sensor fit, the command system, the communication system, and then the cooling capacity and generation capacity to go with it. That's why T45, T26 & USA AB's are the size they are.

@thinkdefence I honestly dont know why navy doesn't commission maybe 20 batch 2 type river class and chuck in a bit of vls and maybe cwis. Absolutely could be done and a lot cheaper and easier to crew. So much more presence at lower cost and higher availability

Just a quick point order, Type 45's were a billion quid each because they included all the expensive sea viper development, radars, missiles, fire control etc. Accepting it wasn't called sea viper then, but you get the point

I was at newly appointed Sir John Stevens first mass briefing. A Fed Rep stood up during Q&A & said one of his officers, was in hospital desperately ill with cancer & was worried as he was about to go on half pay. Sir John's response was brief. 'Oh no he's not." Next day the stricken PC received a visitor: Sir John Stevens!!

@BartGonnissen Interesting, one of those photos shows waterline damage, not an airborne drone/missile then, likely an unmanned fast attack craft. I suspect they've got a rather large stock of those.

RN operating joint attack sub fleet (SSN+SSK) not a bad idea. Perhaps both UK and Canada will end up with such undersea fleets.
Iain Ballantyne@IBallantyn

@AlexLuck9 @Thomas977673521 Should have a similar effect today - great to work with allies. Superb subs. Now buy some UK. Needed for so many reasons to save the Submarine Service (not to replace SSNs but complement them).

@rorysutherland I’d had have preferred “figures from the golden age of British SitCom”. Hancock. Steptoe and Son. And then a rolling selection of these would tide us over until money itself is no longer a thing.

British wildlife will replace historical figures on the next series of Bank of England banknotes - and the public will get their say on which animals and birds will appear. On #BBCBreakfast Peter Ruddick explained why it's the end people such as Winston Churchill, Jane Austen and Alan Turing on new £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

@ModernNavy @HouseofCommons The secretary of state, or CDS for that matter, shouldn't be involved in that decision. It's an operational matter, therefore the remit of the Fleet Commander, (3*). SoS, CDS and even 1SL are not operational commanders, they provide policy, oversight & budget.

@Jacob_Rees_Mogg @YouTube David Cameron & George Osborne is what happened @Jacob_Rees_Mogg as soon as they won office they set about scraping ships. And for balance, several years earlier Blair & Brown reduced the T45 order from 12 to 6.

@agbdrilling @pinstripedline The big difference between now and 82 is the number of ships that were either already at sea, or at 48hrs notice. Compared to today the 82 fleet was huge. Responsibility for the decline lies with every government since 1990.

Two days after the Falkland Islands were invaded in 1982 the Royal Navy had its first Submarine heading South, followed a day later by the lead elements of a task force including Aircraft carriers. 127 ships eventually went south That was in an analogue age. Then We had a Prime Minister that said make it so

It is barely 48hrs since Akrotiri was attacked - important to realise that military activity occurs at normal speed, not 'twitter speed'. There are many things that must be done, plans made, ministerial approval sought and given. It is not as easy as saying 'make it so'.

🇬🇧Britain sent warships into Brazilian harbours. Without permission. Seized ships at anchor. In their waters. Under their flag. Brazil refused to stop the slave trade. So Parliament passed the Aberdeen Act. It authorised the Royal Navy to treat Brazilian slave ships as pirates. Anywhere. Brazil was furious. Diplomatic crisis. The Navy went anyway. Into harbours. River mouths. Ships seized. Crews arrested. Enslaved people freed. Within five years, Brazil banned slave imports. The world hated Britain for this. Ending slavery cost them trade. Cost them allies. Other empires called it interference. Britain didn't care. Be part of us: proudofus.co.uk Be proud of us. 🇬🇧
