#BinTheBill #ProtectionOfSovereigntyBill2026 The Bill presents itself as a law for defending Uganda’s sovereignty. 📃On paper, the Bill is framed as a law about sovereignty, foreign influence and national protection, but actually the Bill in its current form poses serious risks to 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐬, 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲, 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 across multiple sectors. 🗂️For instance, the Bill’s language on publishing information & economic sabotage raises major concern for journalists, researchers, policy analysts and many other media-related experts. 📰If critical reporting on corruption, economic mismanagement, investment disputes, social unrest or regulatory failure is framed as causing economic disruption, then the public space becomes narrower and more fearful. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐲 𝐢𝐟 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲. That matters because good policy depends on evidence, criticism, debate and correction. I feel like the Bill confuses criticism with sabotage and disagreement with disloyalty. 🔎If Parliament insists on engaging the subject further, it should begin from a fresh, narrowly tailored and evidence-based process rather than trying to patch a fundamentally flawed Bill. @MbabaziFridah

Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo finishes third at the 2026 London Marathon behind race winner Sebastian Sawe of Kenya (1.59.30) and Ethiopia’s Youmif Kejelcha (1.59.41). Sawe became the first man to finish the 42km event in under two hours.
