Starting late May, I’m joining @base, Coinbase’s public blockchain, as Korea Country Lead. While I still have much to learn, I’m deeply grateful for this opportunity—and I’d like to share a few reflections and intentions this new chapter brings. My name, Hyuckjae (赫才), means “to shine one’s talents”—a call I’ve taken not just to develop my own abilities, but to help those around me shine, especially within the communities I belong to. That belief led me to platforms, and in my first year of college, I founded an HR tech startup to connect and scale human potential. While building that company, I was introduced to blockchain through clients and mentors. What began as technical curiosity gradually deepened—as I came to see blockchain as a new model for user ownership of data, identity, and incentives. That realization shifted my path. With the advocacy of investors/teammates, I exited the company and began exploring how this vision could take shape in the real world through roles at Paycoin and the Mina Protocol. Along the way, I came to believe that for blockchain to reach mass adoption, five elements must move in harmony: vision, governance, culture, execution, and scalability. I’m grateful to join Base, a team that embodies that very balance. Built on Ethereum, the most open and decentralized protocol, Base provides an open and permissionless Layer 2 where anyone can build and verify onchain apps—with user experiences that match those of Web2.0. While Coinbase currently stewards Base, its long-term goal is to become a public good—and it has already completed the first phase of its decentralization roadmap. I’m especially grateful to @XenBH , who recognized me early, listened with sincerity, and opened the door to this self-actualizing journey. Why Korea, and why now? Korea is home to world-class talent, teams, and companies that have continuously adapted to digital transformation. But key foundations for digital sovereignty—like data ownership, incentive design, and governance—remain underdeveloped. Many public blockchain projects in Korea have struggled due to regulatory uncertainty, fragile infrastructure, and the absence of a sustainable builder culture and pipeline—leading to skepticism and stagnation across the industry. I believe now is the time to change that. With Coinbase’s culture of responsible innovation, the Stand with Crypto movement, and a value chain that supports builders from idea to proliferation, I hope to import, localize, and expand what’s worked globally into the Korean and broader APAC ecosystem. To the founders, creators, and freedom-seeking builders across Korea and APAC: let’s build an internet where—even in an age of superintelligent AI—users still own, act, and thrive. @hahnryu @BrendanBlumer @bytemaster7 @EOSnFoundation It has always been my thesis that when the BPs unwound the governance structures in EOS some 6 months after it launched, the fix was in. It lasted another 6 months before its price collapsed as insiders realised...the workers had left. "my keys my crypto" made it nix, owned nix.
