@RasmusJarlov As a Turk living in England, I see a huge increase in bots pretending to be Greeks pushing anti Turk narratives which started right after Iran war and Israeli officials announcing Turkey is next.

If you look at the agendas that are being pushed in waves by the fake bot armies on Twitter, who do you think is behind it? - Make US Americans and Europeans hate each other - The USA should leave NATO - The EU must be dismantled - Orban is a hero - Ukraine is evil. Russia is our friend It is so obvious. And by the way, this is exactly why the EU has fined Twitter for lack of transparency. To protect free speech, we must protect the public debat from fake bots that are used actively by the enemies of the free world to divide and weaken it.

@CaraLisette Few years ago I made £310k; fucked my life/health; not sustainable or worthwhile especially since effective tax rate was 45%. Asked for demotion, on paper salary halved but much lower tax rate means take home is still ok though one fewer person to pay for your benefits.

MAGA constantly talks shit about Europe and the UK, while ignoring the reality. For example, the US is 5% of the world's population yet has 20% of its prisoners. Around 2 million people are behind bars. An additional 2.9 million are on probation and over 800,000 are on parole. That's 5.7 million under some form of state correctional control. 5.7 million is a larger population than New Zealand, Ireland, Norway or Finland.
Very Brexit Problems@VeryBrexitProbs

Trump, MAGA, Farage, Reform and GB News hate the UK and want us to believe the UK is a failing state compared to the USA. The facts disagree. On practically every measure of quality of life, health, safety, education, environment, the UK would rank as the best state in America. The land of the "free " (where people get yanked off the street by masked men) is also the land of half a million medical bankruptcies a year and the world’s largest prison population. This is the reality.

@Dave61164 @sequi_simon if one argues moral superiority and makes it the premise on which to attack another sovereign country, the one who does the attacking should naturally attract more condemnation, does it not?

US Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth: "We will keep pushing, keep advancing, no quarter, no mercy for our enemies." ("No quarter" means refusing to show mercy, spare lives, or take prisoners during a conflict, often resulting in killing all enemies. It is a war crime prohibited by the Hague Convention of 1907 (Article 23)). Meanwhile the search continues for missing US airman from downed F-15. Let us hope that the Iranians have a more "christian" attitude towards their enemies than the Americans do towards theirs.

Growing up my dad told me innumerable stories of the evils that Islamic Turks did to Greek Christians. I never dreamt I'd grow up in a world where Islam could still do such things. But Islam hasn't changed -- and neither has Christian faith. Good & evil are still with us.
IDI@idicenter

Thousands of Greek Christian Monks were massacred in 1822 on the hands of the Ottomans, burned alive, enslaved, and wiped from their homes on the island of Chios. Their skulls still remain in a monastery today. This is a story most people have never heard. Read Forgotten Skulls by @bulutuzay_ idicenter.org/article/forgot…

@AtticumFloreat @Elijah_D_profit @BiankaB12 Some Ottoman slaves got promoted to the second most important job in the country (after the sultan) too and many more made great generals (and that was the reason why slav boys were being enslaves in the first place)

I agree. After Bulgaria fought its independence from the Ottomans, the first constitution had a provision that every enslaved person that sets his foot in Bulgaria is immediately a free man / woman. Many enslaved women from Ottoman harems fled to Bulgaria to escape their captors. If we are to do this, we need to be objective about it. Slavery wasn't an uniquely European or American phenomenon. The Ottomans and the Arabs were arguably much higher on the list in terms of scope and scale. The Arab Slave Trades transported literal millions of Africans across the Indian Ocean and Sahara desert. Not to mention they have slaves to this day, but that is something nobody seems to want to talk about.

@phl43 This is jn a similar way Pearl Harbor made US more “powerful” - it freed FDR to ignore isolationists which allowed him to actually use that power in practice - theoretical power doesn’t always translate equally to practical power but the US attack on Iran did precisely that.

@phl43 Iran is now justified in public opinion to close the strait; if it had done the same before it was attacked, the world, including the chinese, would be involved to force them to open it. So the attack made Iran more powerful as they can now exert that “power” without a constraint

This doesn't make any sense. Iran always had the ability to close Hormuz, thus indirectly controlling the price of oil, but it wasn't doing it because that's a very risky move. The reason why it's now using that power is that it doesn't have a choice, because it's getting pummeled by far superior military forces, which is obviously not something that makes you more powerful. There is a plausible case that Iran will be able to force the US to end the war by keeping the strait closed, you can say that, but the idea that it's more powerful now than before the war is idiotic.
Robert A. Pape@ProfessorPape

Iran is more powerful now than before the war — it controls the price of world oil and more likely to fracture the US coalition than US is to grow it. Stunning gains in 17 days

@_ctesiphon @tparsi Int’l law doesn’t ‘shield’ anyone just like criminal law doesn’t shield murderers. it is simple: you can’t take justice in your own hands because you think someone is a murderer. Otherwise you are no better than that other person (since, then, you’ll have both violated the law)

@tparsi Wrong. "Equal application" means equal accountability, it goes both ways. One can not massacre it's own citizens, fund terror proxy groups that are hostile to neighbors, and then later demand international law shield you from consequences.

The infantility of the German gov appears to have no limits. The German FM now says that "regimes like Iran cannot invoke international law.” The most fundamental principle of international law is that it applies equally to all states. To challenge that is to declare yourself a rogue state.

This is exactly why “balance of probability” is required for these cases. It’s pretty clear that the Benfica player has said something, but he’s covered his mouth to avoid being ‘proven’ guilty. You’ll never get a “beyond reasonable doubt” verdict in these cases because there’s no way to 100000% verify what was said. Therefore, common sense is required to ensure scumbags like this get what they deserve.

Every single one of these students will be entitled to claim asylum once they arrive here, because of the ECHR. These students Labour are giving scholarships to never need to return to Gaza. Our laws are no longer fit for purpose. This is why we need to leave the ECHR and control our borders. It’s the only way we can decide who gets to stay in our country.
Hamish Falconer MP@HFalconerMP

Pleased to confirm a second cohort of students from Gaza with scholarships at British universities arrived in the UK today to begin their studies. They could play a vital role as future leaders in postwar Gaza.
