One of the strangest aspects of modern criminal justice is the assumption that innate qualities which increase the likelihood of offending - psychological abnormality, low intelligence, etc - should *reduce* culpability, rather than increasing importance of segregating offenders.

🇳🇴 A Syrian migrant found guilty of raping a 13-year-old Norwegian girl in a bike shed in Tromsø will serve just six months in prison after the sentencing court ruled that the attacker had a "low IQ" and "a reduced understanding of reality." Abdelmonem Abdelrazak Al-Yousef was found to have raped the girl in September 2024, less than a year after arriving in Norway from Syria. He met her in Tromsø city center before assaulting her on a park bench and leading her to a secluded bike shed near the Harbour Terminal where he raped her. He initially denied meeting the girl, but after semen was found at the scene and traced to him, he admitted to meeting the victim but not engaging in sexual activity. Psychiatric assessments showed he had a very low IQ, and the court ruled that "the defendant is most likely no further along in development than the victim." A change to Norwegian law last year removed the minimum prison sentence of three years for rape, allowing the court to impose a partial suspended sentence conditional on probation, meaning he will only serve six months inside.

The Rosetta Stone was used a piece of cement on a fortification before the French found it and realized the magnitude of their discovery. The Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs went untranslated for 1400 before a Frenchman deciphered them.
The modern day “Egyptians” wouldn’t even know half of the ancient Egyptian history they pretend is theirs if it wasn’t for British and French historians who documented and translated it. Thanks to them they now marvel at being inheritors of a great and ancient civilization.
Now ask yourself, how many more artifacts of ancient civilizations we’ve lost to time because the supposed “descendants” couldn’t be fucked to see their inherent value and preserve them?
If it wasn’t for the British museum we’d probably see Tutankhamens cock hanging off a rack in some carpet merchants stall. Thank God for it and may not a single artifact ever be returned to Egypt.

The situation with pig farming specifically makes me feel so bleak. In a sane world it'd be so easy to get sign-off on not torturing a hundred million pigs each year. They're each obviously as smart as a dog. But there's almost no reaction to this and it's drowned out by jokes.

Something bizarre about those movies is how they don't seem to want you to invest in them at all. Every decision they make that carries forward is the wrong decision.
Like Prometheus was terrible thanks to the writing but people liked the main character and had one thing they were willing to invest in going forward. To see her journey and getting answers and then he kills her off inbetween movies and makes the engineers redundant. In Covenant he introduces Walter, who is also an interesting person you wouldn't mind seeing where he and the main character goes and he just kills him off mid movie and once again only David is left. There's nothing to cling onto in these movies like there was Ripley. Every film feels like a reset and David begins to really overstay his welcome because he exists to basically kill off anything and anyone interesting about the movies.

My personal opinion is that the first crewed Mars landing shouldn’t be on any portion of the planet that might end up underneath an ocean. Terraforming isn’t a question of if, but how long it will take, and I don’t want to see our equivalent of Apollo 11 drowned under an ocean.
